Washout at Indibloggies

Ok! Nerve Endings Firing Away was completely humiliated at the recently-concluded Indibloggies. After being nominated among the biggies for the Indi Blog of the Year, I had as much chance of winning it as the Hajj going by without a stampede. Of course, I was busy running around and enjoying myself in India when the canvassing was supposed to be done. So I guess, I must thank the twelve people who thought I was worthy of being the Indi Blog of the Year (although I myself voted for the eventual (and deserving) winner, India Uncut). Vichaar.org saved me the blushes by polling the least number of votes (sorry, dude but thanks too). However, the humiliation was buffered as DesiPundit won in both the categories it was nominated in — Best Indiblog directory/service/clique and Best Group Blog. Honestly, DesiPundit is neither of the two. It certainly isn’t a directory because we do not claim to be an all-consuming index of desi blogs and definitely not a group blog although a group of us post links. Thennavan, rest assured we didn’t lobby at all to win anything; honestly I care less; honestly.

However, I neither involved myself in the nomination process much nor took sides when the Indibloggies got mired in controversy. I did nominate DesiPundit in other categories that it didn’t make the cut but didn’t complain when the jurors nominated it in other categories. Winning the Best Group Blog was surprising and unexpected because of the presence of other worthy candidates like the excellent SEA EAT blog and eclectic Sepia Mutiny (a true group blog); Secular-Right India has some great quality writing too. Debashish did a thankless job of organizing the award for the third year running and I guess, by now he expects its share of detractors. I guess, he must be glad that this is over until the next year. By the way, I’ll be eligible for the Lifetime Achievement Award next year and I know that they give that to those who cannot win anything else. So I have a glimmer of hope next year :)

“Thennavan, rest assured we didn’t lobby at all to win anything” – Patrix, you and I go a long way back in the blogosphere (relatively speaking :-)) and you know me better than that :-). You and I know (about certain things) that I always rooted for DP :-)(but not many who may think if they just judge me from that post). All I was saying was that whoever decided to include DP in the directory section did something that seemed out of the ordinary. One thing they should have known is that group blogs even though involve work in themselves are still shared by a lot of people whereas I single-handedly compiled in a painstaking manner over 1000 bloggers and classified them by city. I did not expect anything in return but when it comes to anything, fairness in selection and processing should be applied and even if I were in a position where I could be accused of not keeping the balance of justice and fair play, then I would ask searching questions of myself.

My post was never to belittle the efforts of Debashish who I know did a good job overall nor was it directed at DP (and YOU of all people should have known that :-)). It was only at the decision-making level that it did not seem right but I did not want to rake it up before since I do not believe in preclusion when it comes to competition. I am happy that I polled enough votes too and that is not a reflection on me or Anand (who later painstakingly redid the design on the site), but rather it is a reflection on the success of the location-based directory concept of Indibloggers itself. There have been instances where people have got in touch with each other because they happened to be blogging from the same city and they said they found each other thru Indibloggers.

So, my satisfaction is already in place. I only questioned what I thought was a step that was not in consonance with what was designed for that category. I always wish DesiPundit all the best and that is why I frequent it often and leave my comments there. Hope this clears any air of confusion regarding my post and on the personal front for you (and Ash), CONGRATULATIONS :-)

    >>he must be glad that this is over until the next year.
Very true P, though with the amount of slander I got this time (with many, some of whom I have known to be good bloggers all along, even going to the level of calling me an idiot and a moron, I am unsure if there would be a next event).

The issue of awards, that too coming from a fellow Indiblogger, has become very touchy, no doubt. While I can understand the “sour-grapes” syndrome, I fail to guess why people do not understand the “subjectivity” that is involved in such awards.

I sincerely feel that the Indiblogdom is still a long way from being sporty and mature, seems too self-obsessed right now. There is lot I wish to say but I would only say that I am saddened and disappointed, I started it for fun but it ain’t fun anymore.

all the heated arguments apart, “Nerve Endings Firing Away was completely humiliated ” you say? hardly the right choice of words, don’t u think! c’mon don’t be so hard on urself! personal satisfaction naam ki bhi koi cheez hai!

congrats for the run away success of desi pundit – many heads were better than one (yours on this blog :)) this time…
and next year, am sure you will win the lifetime achievement award and then you can go enjoy peaceful retired life on the french riviera or wherever… till then, blog away, veteran :)

“Nerve Endings Firing Away was completely humiliated” is not a fair comment on yourself, and the numerous readers. DP did deservedly well, even if the classification leaves a lot to be desired. SM was and remains a truly wonderful groupblog, and would be well within its rights to feel aggrieved, though voting is the prerogative of individual readers. :-)

All said, you’re one heck of a guy, blog or no blog. And yes, Debashish could surely do with a helping hand, so why not help him out? (Since you reckon NEFA would anyways not figure in awards list next year. *grin)

PS: Felt compelled to leave a comment on account for that single line alon. I believe NEFA deserves better from its creator. :-)

congrats Patrix. i think you guys are doing a great job at Desipundit. and likewise goes for this blog too :)

Dear Patrix, I tried to post my comment at the IndiBloggies site, but I was like huh, it didn’t make it past modderation. Will you please take a look at my comment on the awards? It’s on my blog, please read.

Thennavan, Of course I know that you meant no malice and actually I appreciate your efforts at compiling a directory for the Indi blogosphere. Honestly, I think DesiPundit didn’t really fit in any categories at the Indibloggies (am not sure which category it might fit in). I just wanted to make myself clear that we did not involve in any underhanded ways to make DesiPundit win; no accusing fingers pointed at you.

Debashish, I can totally understand what you feel given that sometimes we face flak for selecting posts at DesiPundit. But I hope you continue the awards irrespective of the criticism.

Shub, LOL! I was just kidding. Of course, I do not mean that in all seriousness. The other blogs were way bigger than mine and I do not mind what ultimately happened :)

Charu, French Riviera?? Gah! only if I could…but thanks anyway.

Heretic, of course, NEFA deserves better…given a choice, it should sweep all categories even the ones it is not eligible for :) and you suggest assisting Debashish…please, with DP on my hands and other secondary blogs, I have my hands full at the moment. But I second you on the Group Blog thingie…but democracy can be a bitch sometimes even if it is in our favor.

Pompy, Hellllloooooo! Where art thou? shaadi ke baad blogs ko bhulla diya? Is marriage really that time-consuming?

Purvi, I guess you are entitled to your opinions whether others like it or not.

And yeah, Pompy..whats with firstly calling me aunty and secondly khulam khula dropping your ghungat? • http://ipatrix.com Patrix

Alpha, don’t worry; they will have a humor category next time or else we’ll lobby hard for a Chicago Tamil only category…mebbe then your win is guaranteed :)
