Cricket Conspiracy Theory

The Pakistani guy over at the local desi store in College Station has a cynical view of the India-Pakistan encounters. He is convinced that they are fixed. He thinks that the matches are an extension of the diplomatic peace process that goes off and on between the two countries.

Sadly I don’t have evidence (ancedotal, if you please) to prove him wrong. The last test series ended with Pakistan taking the test honors while India romped home in the ODI series. The recently concluded series at Abu Dhabi also ended with shared honors. Of course, I don’t believe that the matches are fixed simply because it would be impossoble to pull it off at that scale and level. But the mixed results offer no help at all. What if the India and Pakistani boards have colluded to share honors and thus keep playing each other fully knowing that in such a scenario, everyone wins; financially and otherwise. But that’s what they call a conspiracy theory, right?

PS. I don’t know if Gillespie hitting a double ton against Bangladesh is a comment on his batting ability or Bangladesh’s bowling ability.

Thanks for posting on this. I wanted to do a post.

It was not just your friend, it was in news yesterday here in India. Everyone thinks the series is fixed. Best was the coverage by a telugu channel called TV9.

I think people in general are stupid. That includes media.

From game theory pov its impossible to fix mathces, because each individual has a need to perform at their best to ensure their long term interests.

At the most, you can fix one or two team members, leak some strategic information, but you cant fix teams anymore.

I would like to conclude whoever thinks ‘oh, thats match fixing’ is basically stupid.

Smiley, I am surprised that it made it to the news…I guess, they have fill the 24-hour news with something, right? Usually such topics were reserved for time-pass bickering on the street corner.
