To-be-disposed World Leaders

Bush has often offered the regime change argument after his forces failed to discover any supposedly hidden WMDs in Iraq. The argument has subtly changed from finding any possible weapons that would eliminate the possible terrorist threat for America to a largely idealistic goal of ‘spreading democracy and freedom’ in largely reluctant regions. We have always wondered if his new argument was even held true then was Saddam Hussein the top priority for a regime change? Of course, he invaded Kuwait and threatened to destabilize the oil economy while lighting many oil wells on fire causing immense environmental damage (can’t forgive him for that alone). But compared to his other less honorable peers, he was just another ruthless dictator.

Washington Post has a small list of world leaders that fit the typical bill for disposal. But will the United States do anything? I guess probably not because it doesn’t have any direct interest in doing so. Now every nation has a right to think about its self interest but to offer generic and utopian excuses for invasion is certainly not considered believable especially when everyone can see through your bluff. I agree with Instapundit that probably Robert Mugabe should be on that list. And I would even add Musharaff. The U.S. thinks of him as a major ally in the war against terror but he is fast losing control of his country to the extremists. Better us remove him and install something that is at least honest about its intentions than have him assassinated overnight by the extremists throwing the region into chaos. But we know that is not happening any time soon, is it?

You are quite right. Bush would have gone ahead and invaded Iraq anyways, WMD was just a red herring.
Hving said that, let me play the devil’s advocate here. Is it not the world better off without Saddam? True many like him and few worse than him remain. But does that make him being disposed bad?

Confused, well, the world is definitely better off without Saddam but not too much considering the chaos that is prevalent out there. Also, the world would have been much better off without Kim Jong II of North Korea or the mullahs in Iran. Bush just chose the weakest of the Axis of Evil coz I guess he expected it to be an easy win and he could then go on to other battlefields. Alas! he is stuck with Iraq.

Removing a ruler and installing someone more favourable to us is straight out of the CIA playbook from 50′s onwards. Why would we ever want to do that having been outraged for long enough when the US did it?. I am afraid your suggestion is an absolutely horrible one, and will cayse problems that will dwarf the ones we have with Pakistan today. India’s policy wrt Pakistan is that it will take to whoever is the ruler at any time, elected or unelected, is a practical, realistic and sane policy. It would be nice if Pakistan had a democracy, but lets not try top impose it there. I doubt we can. Infact I am sure we cannot.

Ohno! Mr. Rajagopal, you have me mistaken. I wouldn’t like us to do it, I’d rather leave that to the able hands of Mr. Bush. But that wouldn’t work. So I would have ‘us’ do it covertly but since I have already outed the plan, now it will not work. Covert operations are great until they are outed. Let me be diplomatic and deny that I ever said it :)

OK, I didn’t read the article you linked to . But don’t you ask for Musharraf’s removal in the article, covert or otherwise. What am I missing?. It is Monday morning and I am not at my sharpest, though it doesn’t get a whole lot better. Glad I provided some unintended comedy. Now, if you’ll excuse, I’ll slink back into the shadows and continue lurking.
