Kaavya Disappoints

Kaavya Viswanathan, the budding desi author who while in high school got a 500,000 book deal has been hit with a plagiarism scandal. So much for being an aspiring Harvard academic. DesiPundit has quite a few links on the story as it develops. No word from Kaavya yet.

Update: Kaavya Viswanathan has apologized and admitted that the plagiarism was unintentional. She promises to revise the manuscript in future editions.

“While the central stories of my book and hers are completely different, I wasn’t aware of how much I may have internalized Ms. McCafferty’s words. I am a huge fan of her work and can honestly say that any phrasing similarities between her works and mine were completely unintentional and unconscious. My publisher and I plan to revise my novel for future printings to eliminate any inappropriate similarities.

“I sincerely apologize to Megan McCafferty and to any who feel they have been misled by these unintentional errors on my part.”

very disappointing news…but this whole situation was fishy from the start. why did such a prestigious publishing house offer such a large cash advance to an unpublished 17 year old author with a draft manuscript for the first book and just ideas for the second book? the publisher admitted that the book required more work on their part than other books. also, i don’t believe the plagarism was unintentional as claimed by the author. the passages are too similar in wording to be dismissed as internalizing the other author’s words.
