We are the best. Or are we?

We have a new Miss India — the most beautiful woman in India, screams the master of ceremonies as the stage is showered with confetti. Pakkya shakes his head and points his stubby finger at the flickering screen and says, apni mohalle ki Champa jyada khabsoorat hai. Yeh chhori kuch khaas nahi! (Champa from our neighborhood is much more beautiful. This chick is no great shakes). Others aware of Pakkya’s vile abuse pretend to ignore him. He rattles on for a while until everyone pick him up and throw him out and go to sleep. Few weeks later, Pakkya is nibbling a dosa at a restaurant opposite V.T. station and gets his innerwear in a bunch when he espies a sign that says, taste the best dosa ever here. Swearing aloud (and making a complete fool of himself in public), he goes on to proclaim that he has had better dosas in Chennai and demands that the restaurant take the sign down. Again, he is ignored and eventually thrown out of the restaurant when he gets irrationally abusive.

Incidentally, we have quite a few Pakkya-like characters in the blogosphere as well. Ordinarily you would think that considering the prevalent digital divide in India, the people that inhabit the Internet space are educated, considerably rational, and have the decency to conduct themselves in public even if it is cyberspace. However, I have come to conclude that the latter two characteristics often do not correlate positively with the first one. Recently, a vociferous minority of people have deemed that DesiPundit’s tagline, The Best of the Indian Blogosphere is misleading considering the ‘lousy’, ‘shoddy’, and ‘crap’ posts that we have been linking recently. (Disagreement with a post doesn’t make it bad, people). Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion and although we have maintained that such opinion is highly vulnerable to subjectivity, it hardly placates those who are hell bent on irrational criticism.

We at DesiPundit have always been open to constructive criticism and even have apologized when we have acted in a seemingly inappropriate manner. But we do not condone or tolerate personal attacks on us or on anyone else, especially through blogs that have been set up to do just that specifically. I wouldn’t understand the level of hate that makes such people invest so much time in doing so. Yup! We started out with the intention of collating the best of the Indian blogosphere and in spite of our limited time and resources and ever growing blogosphere, I think we do a decent job of connecting people to quality posts. The term ‘best’ is at best ambiguous and as reliant as the GRE or IIT JEE is in determining intellectual capability of a student.

In all honestly, if we really enforce the tag of ‘best writing’, we would be linking only to a handful of blogs with the occasional one-hit wonder. In that case, you wouldn’t even need DesiPundit. You could simply subscribe to those blogs and read them everyday. But people come to DesiPundit for the occasionally quirky post; something inane that makes your chuckle, something so nostalgic that you could swear it was your childhood the author was writing about; something so fictional that you wonder why the author isn’t making a million bucks writing; something so sarcastic that you almost pity the victim of sarcasm; something so captivating that you could swear that you can feel the sand in between your toes on the beach; something so critical that you secretly know that the author is right even though your ‘patriotic’ instincts indicate otherwise. If we had to link to well-researched and deeply analyzed posts as an aspect of merit, we are better off linking to news articles on mainstream media sites. Why bother with the personalized and opinionated touch of blogs?

Every blogger lends a unique touch to his/her blog that lets us experience an aspect of writing that we never thought had existed. The term ‘best’ gets diluted each time we read a different post and wonder, hmmmm; someone will like this because I certainly do. We aim to be the one-stop resource for the Indian blogosphere but heck, any blogger worth his permalink knows that is not possible. DesiPundit reflects the opinion of their contributors; currently eight people who are scattered in at least six time zones and three continents. But at the same time, every DesiPundit reader is an extended contributor because of the ability to send in tip-offs. We receive many tips and I am glad to say that most of them are worth linking to; so in a way, the circle of opinion of DesiPundit widens. As the libertarian cartel would say, if we aren’t doing our job well, we would experience a drop in our readership and some other aggregator would pop up. If people thought they are doing a better job, they would switch. DesiPundit would then die a slow death but honestly, I wouldn’t mind.

Of course, tell us that the post we linked to sucked but also tell us when we rocked. In both cases, the credit or the blame goes to the blog author. At times, we link to aggregated bunch of posts due to the hot-button nature of the issue at hand. This is done primarily to bring your attention to a topic that we think is significant for us as Indians or even citizens of the world. We support the other desi blog communities out there and honestly feel that we share an excellent rapport with them with not a hint of competition amongst us. The implicit understanding is that we are making at least an iota if not more, of a difference in connecting people. If you are so sure of what you like and what you don’t, just take a moment and read the following paragraph:

“Everyone always talks about confidence and believing in what you do. I remember once going to a class in Kundalini yoga where the teacher said that, spirituality speaking, if you believed that you had achieved enlightenment you have merely arrived at your limitation. I think that is also true in a more practical sense. Deeply held beliefs of any kind prevent you from being open to experience, which is why I find all firmly held ideological positions questionable. It makes me nervous when someone believes too deeply or too much. I think that being skeptical and questioning all deeply held beliefs is essential. Of course we must know the difference between skepticism and cynicism because cynicism is as much a restriction of one’s openness to the world as passionate belief is. They are sort of twins” (Source: unknown)

So in conclusion, we believe that we bring the best of the Indian blogosphere and we do not wish to engage in a debate of what exactly best stands for. If you beg to differ, use the power of the free-market against us and stop patronizing DesiPundit. That is the strongest message you can send us. Consider the collective whole instead of dissecting into small non-contextual bits. Live for the experience and experience the untested. You might be in for a pleasant surprise. As we widen the net, we are sure to offer something for everyone. Remember one man’s treasure might be another man’s trash. If you think you are that important that everyone should toe your line of what’s best for everyone, then remember Carl Sagan’s words that you are just an infinitesimal part of something that is an infinitesimal part of the universe. There are at least 6 billion (1.1 billion in India alone) reasons you could be wrong and that is just on Earth. If everything fails, then I suppose desipunditsucks.com is available. We’ll be flattered.

PS. Some might suggest that ignoring such petty criticism might be a better way. But I believe that criticism, however irrational should be addressed otherwise our silence simply lends credence to such hate-mongers. Ask John Kerry on his Swift Boat Veterans experience.

PPS. I have refrained from addressing the more specific criticisms that were raised in the comments on DesiPundit because those were simply meant to launch personal attacks and not indulge in any form of debate. But I might train my guns on the bugger if he resurfaces.

I personally believe that desipundit.com is being too modest. Obviously it is ‘The Best’ of Indian Blogosphere. The amount of crap thats put on blogs (that includes most of my blog too) is simply unbelievable.

To filter through this huge pile of information (crap) on a daily basis (not through algorithms) itself is a super human act.

I generally find any post thats put on Desipundit much better than what I could have found on the net.

I like Desipundit.com because it has enhanced my blog experience (what otherwise could have been very limited because of the lack of my ability to find good blogs) so much.

    So here is my vote.
    You are the best.

P.S: There are lot of other Indian Group blogs. I have a choice to go there too. But I ended up here. So, there goes your free market inclining towards ‘the best’. :-)

I dont understand your sounding off every couple of months about DP.

If you are receiving brickbats via email, fuck em.

You and everyone else are doing a great job. Your sitemeter attests to that.

By venting in the manner you do, you are just providing fodder to the canon of those that are jealous or frankly incompetent to be featured on DP.

Sorry to be so blunt, but with DP growing so rapidly, I would expect a more mature outlook.

  • http://ipatrix.com Patrix

Smiley, thanks for your words. Opinion like yours makes me forget buggers who don’t get it.

Arzan, I guess you would expect me to simply ignore such buggers. Heck, even I wish I could. But truth be told, this does affect me and that’s why I chose to voice it on my blog and not DesiPundit. I try to ignore but I don’t want to seem to be avoiding issues and it doesn’t hurt reprimanding them. I am fine with criticism but cannot digest personal attacks. Anyway, as DP grows, I’ll try to cope with such matter in a better manner.

    Patrix,
For every detractor that you might have, you’ve many more people who find desipundit instructive and interesting. Obviously, all of us can come and praise you for every post. I could have for instance, told you, how happy I was to read that post on quizzing in Asansol. It was something I wouldn’t have found on my own. However, I choose not to comment, as my eyeballs are evidence enough.

The freemarket as you said provides a better sense of compliments than comments itself. Whenever some troll comes and leaves behind a personal attack, ignore it and have a look at the site-meter.
    Cheers,
    Dhoomketu

    Hi,

Desipundit is full of people who work hard to bring the best of the Indian blogosphere, but its also a website that doesn’t seem to care for others opinions and seems to have a massive inferiority complex…whats with you and ur gf whinging about it every few months? Get over it, its just a blog! Im starting to wonder how you guys react to criticism outside the blogosphere, do what you have to do and stop complaining already, whats with Indians and politics? if it doesn’t exist, they create it! grr!

  • http://dilse.blogspot.com deez

there always that bunch of pakyas around, and they r there coz they cldnt do better, so all they r good for is that backseat commentry which no one is interested in anyways.

Desipundit is doing a great job, and you just keep doin it. all that noise just adds to the loudness of applause! :)

  • http://www.curiousgawker.blogspot.com/ gawker

I think DP is doing a much better job than merely posting “the best” of the Indian blogosphere. Bringing lesser-known bloggers to the surface, making it easier for talented writers to gain some audience without them having to toil in anonymity for a long time posting comments on others’ blogs in order to entice people to their website. Being diverse is about as important as being the best. Otherwise, one wouldn’t need DP, one would merely need a blogroll. I think you guys are doing a fine job.

    Patrix,

My theory is that everyone has an inner Pakya – that just wants to keep finding faults in other people and get into endless arguements. The levels to which it manifests itself in real life varies. But the cloak of anonimity afforded by the internet brings out the worst face of this Pakya.

Okay – that was my Thursday-when-is-the-week-going-to-end, pre-coffee early morning profound philosophizing. Back to work.

From one ‘pondit’ to another – you guys rock ! Keep linkin’

    Cheers
    BP

PS – I think the best part of DP is actually the pithy comments most of you add to whatever/whoever you are linking – provides an extra spice.

Dhoomketu, Of course I do not expect everyone to shower lavish praise on us each time we link an interesting post but a little word or two occassionally goes a long way. More eyeballs are definitely welcome but we rather not have a blog version of TOI, if you get my drift.

Sunny, your statement that DesiPundit doesn’t care for people’s opinions and has an inferiority complex couldn’t be further than the truth. In fact, we have often been accused of the contrary. Politics and Indians, or rather humans (no regionalism there, trust me) is hardwired into our genes. I guess, we just have to learn to deal with it. I didn’t write this post to solicit compliments but in fact to answer some queries that were raised. I feel that I should because probably, I owe it to the readers and also, otherwise you would come back and accuse me of indifference.

Deez, thanks. A blogger friend mentioned that if we are getting more and more brickbats then we are getting popular. I guess that’s true but we aren’t some faceless corporation that can pretend to be unaffected by personal attacks because honestly we are; at least I am.

    Gawker,

Otherwise, one wouldn’t need DP, one would merely need a blogroll.

Exactly! the tagline of ‘best of the blogosphere’ is taken too literally and defined narrowly by the detractors. It works  if you consider the variety and number of different blogs that DP tries to link to.

Bongo, you may be right there but it takes certain inherent evilness to enjoy doing so over and over again. The anonymity definitely gives more power to such cowards who wouldn’t hurl personal abuse to my face. Anyway, this post was a rant too…where else would I vent out my blog frustrations, right? :)

you do love a brawl….. or sort of………blog brawl……………but seriously you dont need to justify your positions- being in the public eye means opening yourself to public opinion- positive and negative…….in the end- stay true to yourself – which you always do and take the positive from the criticism- and you’re on your way to eternity.

  • Bryan

I love reading Desipundit. The variety in the links you post gives the readers a healthy dose of a mental workout. I agree it is hard to ignore personal attacks and vitriolic comments. But you can’t please everyone. So let the idiots be and carry on with the stellar work!

  • http://gratisgab.blogspot.com Gabby

I think you guys do an amazing job. But it’s a blog, so there will be nice visitors and not-so-nice ones. Going green is as common on the blogosphere as it is in the real world. Take it as a compliment and move on!

  • star

    Hey Patrix!

I adore DP. It has opened up a whole new set of blogs out there that I might never have chanced upon on my own! I love that the posts are categorized as some genres appeal to me more than others. Great job! And thank you!

  • http://www.retributions.wordpress.com confused

    Yoho,

I remember reading the comments you allude to and they were in bad taste. I think in Falstaff’s post I made the same point that if the quality was the sole issue hardly a few bloggers would deserve to be on DP. (Even without that I almost never feature on DP, tells me how bad my quality is.:))

Frankly, I do have some issues with a few posts you link to, and I mercilessly shred the blogger to pieces for it. I am not sure how anyone can blame you for that.

Keep rocking guys, you do a swell job. And try linking to me, for change. :)

Just kidding, but seriously try to ignore the trolls.

    Cheers

  • http://ipatrix.com Patrix

M, of course I love a brawl as long as decorum is maintained and illogical arguments can be exposed. I have taken only the best from any criticism that I have got so far regards DesiPundit. I just don’t chose to announce it that way.

Bryan, thanks, dude. I’m glad you enjoy our work.

    Gabby
, hey, nice to see you down here :) But you are right, the green-eyed monster is everywhere.

Star, the variety of the posts that we link to is far more important than trying just to link the ‘best’ posts.

    Confused
, Guilty as charged. I have ignored your posts for far too long and trust me, many of them have deserved to be on DesiPundit. I just get overwhelmed with tip-offs that it leaves little time for me to surf blogs to link them. But then guess what, we’ll see a new allegation that you need to comment on Patrix’s blog frequently if you want to be featured on DP :)

And hey, feel free to criticize some of the posts that we link to and I was merely peeved with people who lack the appropriate language skills to do so. Some of the posts are admittedly linked to generate discussion and I do not always agree with their content. But if a post generates discussion and argument, then it deserves to be linked.

  • http://finite-infinity.blogspot.com Queer

Well, Patrix, I admit that I am not into all the posts that are tagged. But that does not mean I don’t enjoy the ones I do.

I see being the best, as being able to bring a variety of different posts. And every post need not necessarily be the best of its kind, but one that appeals many.

  • http://www.retributions.wordpress.com confused

What? My ribbing finally worked! I was just pulling your leg about not linking me, I totally understand.

Lol@ commenting on your blog. I am sure Bongo has some thoughts on that. :)

But yes, I have never commented on DP before, but after now I shall. Ash is right, you guys need some encouragement and constructive criticizm.

    Cheers.

First time and liked the writing on the wall. Its so straight from the heart! Will keep visitin…

  • http://ipatrix.com Patrix

Queer, as long as the ones that you enjoy make you come back, I guess its worth it. Variety, IMO is preferable to strict guidelines of merit.

Confused, looking forward to hearing from you on DesiPundit.

    Grey Shades
    , thanks.

  • http://www.writing-onthe-wall.blogspot.com Casablanca

Hmmmm. I seem to be an odd one here. Coz I rarely use DP to read blogs. This is inspite of the fact that I have been linked there a couple of times. I landed on your blog right now, and I like the fact that you chose to rant about it. Hell, why should you (or anyone) take flak for something you are doing for free.
