Did You Just Say That?

As published in Mid-Day Mumbai [hat tip: Manish]. This is wrong on so many levels (ok, at least on one). But then we Indians are renowned for stereotyping and political-incorrectness (remember Aamir Khan’s Coca-Cola ad mimicking a Japanese tourist?)

On a related note, Senator Joe Biden said the following: ‘You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent’. Hope Indian-Americans remember that when he seeks the Democratic party ticket for 2008. It seems like a day of stereotyping and saying aloud what you think is funny when in fact, it is not.

    hehe. The

    cannot

was slightly over the top but he was not really wrong! Majority of Dunkin Donuts are owned by Indians.

And I really feel that there are many more important issues than this one, and even if one is offended by it, this cant be a voting issue. Indian Americans like other Americans should only vote on the basis of what is best for their country and not what Biden said(an apology/clarification is surely on the way) or what is best for India. They are Americans first.

Confused, Yeah I know! It wasn’t that big a deal. A simple apology will be enough. It simply was a case of thinking aloud.

Ha ha. That is very funny! What would the comment be if France wins the world cup? “The Wine has fermented?” :)

Bindu, sadly that never happened. The Mid-Day must bring out its Pizza headline again.

Manish, thanks for those links. I have already seen them and find it surprising that how insensitive we can be when it comes to making fun of others but get riled up easy when its our turn in the barrel.
