In the immediate aftermath, there was worry about communal violence erupting - especially given the mindless riots by the Shiv-Sena and the lynching of policemen in a Muslim neighborhood earlier in the week. Personally I felt that after such a carnage, the common people are too busy picking up their lives than going about killing each others. Additionally, as Confused points out, historically there has not been any communal incidents following such terrorist acts. [...]

[...] Soon after the Mumbai train bombings, speculations began on the Indian response (both of the common people and the government) to these terrorist attacks. OK, so you are quick on the draw and pull out Mother Teresa's name. Can you name something that you actually know about (not just vaguely think) that she had actually done? The reason I ask is because for the last few years I am searching for something concrete that she has done -- perhaps a hospital, a school, anything at all -- and it appears that I have come up with zilch. I realize that her reputation is phenomenal but what I am concerned about is that there is no evidence of anything that she has actually done other than converting a lot of people.
Sincerely, I would really really be interested in knowing of anything that she had done other than make houses for her nuns?

but im glad that no parties took this incident as an excuse to go to street-war.
what is the response? is there one? short of total paranoia... i mean , its the classic case of "I have met the Enemy and he is us"...
i agree with the Israel-Lebanon type of solution just leading to creating MORE such incidents and more people willing to do this kind of insane acts.
...
turning the other cheek is bad, but breaking arm in response is worse ... is there a solution at all ?

i agree, just dying and moving on is wrong.

but im glad that no parties took this incident as an excuse to go to street-war.

what is the response? is there one? short of total paranoia… i mean , its the classic case of “I have met the Enemy and he is us”…

i agree with the Israel-Lebanon type of solution just leading to creating MORE such incidents and more people willing to do this kind of insane acts.

…

turning the other cheek is bad, but breaking arm in response is worse … is there a solution at all ?

By: Patrix

<guid

A bunch of cowards, idiots and what not , who are waiting for the silliest reason to go abt ransacking public property. Whom are they terrorising? The terrorists or the spineless politicians or the common man who is back on the streets not because he is resilient, but because he does want to lose his pay?
Who was she (Mrs. Tackheray)? Some Jhansi Rani or a Mother Teresa? What did she do to the general public? Who put up here statue in a public place in the first place? Who gave those idiots the rights to go abt on a violent spree just because someone smeared something on that statue? (who knows, maybe the Senas were bored and needed an excuse and could have smeared the mud themselves! )

“Frankly cant blame the Senas (for creating terror and instability) ” – That was the last thing I expected to be seeing here!

A bunch of cowards, idiots and what not , who are waiting for the silliest reason to go abt ransacking public property. I have thought about that - but the question is - do we have such missile capabilities ? What about the mountainous terrain ? What are Pakistan's anti-missile strategies ?
The most important aspect of undertaking any millitary action (targeted or otherwise) is the diplomatic fall-out. Look how Israel is attacking Lebabon with impunity. Now, we do not have as much US backing as Israel...but I doubt if we have made enough effort to show-case our growing impatience with Pakistan. All Western nations would like to avoid a showdown between India and Pak - but we have to undertake a positive diplomatic initiative to convince them that Pakistan's support of anti-Indian terrorism, tacit or otherwise, is not acceptable. Either they force Pakistan to behave to we go in.
Unofortunately, our diplomatic efforts have been weak and lacking resolve. So I am not sure how much we can go ahead with the millitary action.

Actually, taking out a terrorist training camp in PoK using a missle might be a right response…no collateral damage and it would make the enemy think.

I have thought about that – but the question is – do we have such missile capabilities ? I think your post just hit the nail on it's head. I am tired of reading blogger after blogger claiming how they are sick of Mumbai's resilience (as if it would be better for them if Mumbai shutdown) and how India is a bunch of cowards and does not know how to respond.
Do they not that times have changed and we live in a nuclear world . About Gen Patton's speech and George Bush's philosophy we have his word that he actually regretted using the words "smoke'em out" and the tactics that followed.
An appropriate response I think would be to gather enough evidence to link the blasts to Pakistan and stop all diplomacy cricket or otherwise until they clean up their act. Peace talks are pointless if they are going to bomb us in our backyard.

Patrix first of, love reading your posts and we seem to be on the same side of the story most often than not. You are right about the nuclear capability...our conventional superiority is more or less moot now. The chinese knew what they were doing.

Actually, taking out a terrorist training camp in PoK using a missle might be a right response…no collateral damage and it would make the enemy think.

You are right about the nuclear capability…our conventional superiority is more or less moot now.
