Blogger Burnout

Although I’ve been at it hard for almost exactly three and a half
years now (that milestone will hit officially Monday), I’ve managed to
avoid the “blogger burnout” that seems to afflict most bloggers. Sure,
it’s a ton of work and there are days when I feel like obligated to
simply crank out content just to get something up, those days
are still, fortunately, rare. I’m still a news junkie and sufficiently
curious about the world around me that I’m seldom long without
something of interest to opine about.

My least favorite part of the “blog job,” though, is the incivility
in comment threads and the occasional cross-blog flamewar. While OTB’s
comment threads are quite civil compared to most blogs of comparable
traffic, there are a handful of regulars who forget the number one rule
of our site policies: “Remember that the people under discussion are human beings.” The
follow-on — “Comments that contain personal attacks about the post
author or other commenters will be deleted. Repeated violators will be
banned. Challenge the ideas of those with whom you disagree, not their
patriotism, decency, or integrity.” — is something that I’ve largely
refrained from enforcing, since it’s a lot of work and I hate to
alienate regular visitors.

Regarding comments: I never had them enabled to begin with, so I can’t relate, although I have seen the flame wars in effect cross many blogs.

Regarding burn out: I don’t think you can, or anyone can, “burn out” because there are always things happening, there are always things to talk about. You just have to be willing to do it. =)

I can;t really relate to the comment wars too as I haven’t had to deal with any yet but as far as a burnout goes, am sure it’l hit me out of the blue when am least expecting it! Am still a new’bie at blogging ( not even a month yet) but like everything currently in my life..i get terribly passionate about something, only ti have my attention span betray me, yet again! :-)
Lets see how it pans out this time!

hmm burn out.. yesshh.. well atleast it appears that you feel strongly about some things that can be blogged about.. and thus have fodder.. for me, everytime I start to type, its like.. ‘nope..cant blog about that.nope thats too personal.. nope thats too scientific..’ aargh.. i want to tear my blog apart. but cant do that.since its virtual and all…

I see what you mean. Sometimes its just difficult to keep writing but I guess its the pleasure of writing which keeps us from giving it up.

And quite right, one wonders if one stops writing tomorrow how many will actually notice?

Megha, why? Who else burned out?

Vi, Yup. Things are always happening and we have opinions but maybe putting them into words and sharing with all can no longer be fun.

Perspective, Any comments wars on my blog have been nipped in the bud coz this is my space and I make the rules. Those who beg to differ are free to f*** off. At that point, it makes sense to disable comments the way Gaurav and Amit have.

Sqrl, I am sure you can definitely find something to blog about; something that isn’t personal or scientific.

Confused, as soon as the pleasure dies out, I am outta here and you’re right about anyone noticing and even if they do, I bet they would hardly miss me before the week is out.
