The One-Eyed Child

Scott Carney, the tech journalist who lives in Chennai writes on the birth of a one-eyed child in Chennai [via Boing Boing]. He adds that this is a rare chromosomal disorder known as cyclopia and is usually attributable to outside factors like ambient pollution, radiation, drugs and the introduction of other agents that can alter fetal development.

This should immediately send authorities scurrying to look for causal reasons and possibly investigate environmental pollution in the area. Industrial pollution often goes unchecked in India or is overlooked by corrupt officials. The innocent, at least in this case, the poor child has to bear the consequences. I hope the child is not subjected to superstitious trauma that often the ignorant society is quick to latch on to.

Good post but such issues should also be picked up by the mainstream media and go after it till some tangible result is achieved. One cannot always let situations go out of control like in Jesica lall’s case before they bring them into control.

What is all this but a lot of intellectual masturbation unless a proper method is formed to address and redress such issues. Such local issues that affect an individual are as important as some national and international issues.

Blogging is the voice of the individual and should be used as such in collusion with the mainstream media instead of just doing endless intellectual gymnastics.
