Best of Shane Warne

Shane Warne retirementI just read that Shane Warne is planning to retire after the Ashes. He is currently at 699 wickets and with two tests to go against England, passing that milestone is a given. Although our best memories of Warne are that of Tendulkar clobbering him for sixes and giving him nightmares, I would still consider him the best spin bowler ever to take field. Of course, his recent personal life was splashed all over the town but that didn’t take away anything from his exploits on the field, especially with the ‘ball of the century’ that flummoxed Gatting. He was a genuine turner of the ball, generating mind-boggling turns even on the spinner-unfriendly pitches. But best of all, he was a fierce competitive cricketer that lent the sport it’s flair and vaulted Australia to the top of the cricketing world. Definitely, Australia is going to miss him. I’m by no means an expert on cricket or Warne so I’ll let you enjoy the best of his moments:

Like they say: Gladiators don’t ever fade, they merely walk away. And he was as good as they came.

I dont really agree with u. He may be one of the greatest spinners but definitely not the greatest ever or even currently playing.

Murali is more effective in all senses if you just go for the statistics.

And sportsmen shouldnt be counted only for their feats and victories on the field. Its the whole package….their human side is important too. And in this regard Shane is way down the list.

    Hey :)

I’m the one who couldn’t access your blog in Singapore. As it turned out, I could access it outside my university’s network. Seems like my college doesn’t want my nerve endings to fire too much :P

Ok, there’s no point to this comment except to say ‘hey’ :)

Anil, I agree. He definitely was an intensely competitive player.

Arzan, I agree that he might not have been the best and friendliest players on the circuit but you cannot deny his talent. Yup, Murali is good too and might overtake Warney’s tally of wickets. But I like to separate the personal and professional sides of at least a players in judging his worth.

Sherene, that’s interesting. I wonder what did I do to piss off your university authorities in Singapore. I would have expected at least the university to not censor blogs unless they have porn which when I last checked, I didn’t.
