Disappearing Space

I updated the Thinkpad updater (yeah, I know) on my laptop yesterday. I downloaded the crucial, recommended, and optional updates to the various utilities and tools that an average Thinkpad comes equipped with. The entire package was about 200+ MB but I let it run and proceeded to install them including a crucial BIOS update. But here is the strange part, after completing I found that my hard disk space had reduced by a whopping 14GB. I can’t think of any updates consuming so much space and I am at a loss to understand. Is it normal and expected?

Any techies out there who care to shed some light on this mysterious disappearance of memory space?

Do you have Google Desktop installed? I have had the same problem of losing the harddrive fast, and I zeroed on the index files the google desktop takes. In my case, the index files took a whopping 25 GB ! To see for yourself, look at the size of “c:\Documents And Settings”. If it is unusually large, go down that directory structure to find the hoggers.

If the above is not the case, then I suggest you install cygwin and use the utility du.

    HTH.

Harshad, I uninstalled Google Desktop long time back. The ‘Documents and Settings’ are a mere 2.5GB. In spite of individually checking each folder on the C:\ I can’t see which is the guilty party.

Then, as I said, du (comes with cygwin) might help you find the hoggers. Else, there are du like applications available on windows, try googling. One such utility I found, looks neat. You can sort the worst hogger directories based on the disk utilization and then you can also double click them to go deeper.

If you want to track down disk usage, look for some disk usage viewer freeware: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Disk_Management/

A pie-chart of your disk would tell you where the majority of your space is consumed.

Thanks guys. I downloaded TreeSize Professional which gave me a good picture. It turns out that most of the space is hogged in creating a restore point post-updates…almost 7GB.
