Feedburner now includes Google readers

I wasn’t sure why the RSS subscribers on my blogs increased dramatically. I hadn’t made any path-breaking posts (and I don’t think I will) but the increase was significant. Daily Blog Tips revealed that I wasn’t alone. Feedburner, which handles the feeds on my blogs, now include Google Reader and Google personalized homepage subscribers. DesiPundit showed an increase of almost 500 readers and my personal blogs showed an increase of 50 readers. Heck, the feed count for my Urban Planning Blog literally doubled (that reminds me I must post there more often). I am sure I’ll get a better count on Monday.

Given the popularity of Google-based feed readers and ubiquity of Google services these days, I am not sure why they hadn’t ironed out this flaw earlier. But I am glad to have a better count of our subscriber base. If you have your own domain for blogging and aren’t using Feedburner, now is a great time to set it up. It is a “set-it-up-and-forget” service and installation although a bit tricky, is easy if you follow instructions correctly.

I hope you are not blaming Feedburner here. The problem was with Google. They never revealed the number of Google Reader subscribers to a feed. Until two days ago.

One more interesting thing: did you notice the relative strength of Google Reader and BlogLines (and other web-based feed aggregators)? If your experience is similar to mine (I have a total sample size of 14! I started using FeedBurner only recently), Reader beats Bloglines by more than 3 to one! Perhaps, you could write about DP’s stats on Reader vs. the rest.

And yet, there hasn’t been much of a buzz around Reader. It’s almost as if it just sneaked up on us!

Personally, I prefer Reader. It’s wonderful.

Patrix replied: you are right, Abi. I was mistaken. I read about Google’s opening up (not really a techie, you know) after I made the post. Bloglines, Newgator, etc. initially were hyped to be vastly popular as compared to Google Reader. No one saw this coming. I too switched to Google Reader recently and have been quite impressed and I have been ‘around the block’ with regards to feed readers. I should’ve probably said a little more about DP’s stats; maybe I’ll add an update later.
