‘A’ Names

Three of my friends recently became dads (shows how far behind in the curve I am) and all of them named their kids starting with the letter ‘A’ – Aayushi, Aarya, Ananya. Also, all were girls. Of course this can be a mere coincidence but one of them confessed that they were advised to name their kid starting with the first letter of the alphabet. I am guessing numerology and ‘name-ology’ that has given us horrors such as Suniel and all the K-serials are largely to blame.

Heck, one of them even joked that his daughter might be first in the roll call that way. I am suspicious that he was only half-joking (he is a ‘W’, last name-wise at least). Remember the anguish you felt when the exam bell rang and the ever-anxious nerdy you a M-named student were among the last to get the question paper because they started distributing them at either ends? I guess it was just me. After all, A-names are bound to run out sometime and we might start seeing Aa names as evident in the first two names I mentioned above. I’m fine as long as no one names their kid Aardvark.

But seriously, have you noticed this A-phenomenon elsewhere among new parents among your friends?

    Don’t you say anything about A people!
    I always enjoyed being high up on the roll calls only to realize that in the US people are arranged based on their last names, which puts me back quite a distance. Of course there are no roll calls in the US. Ah well! But equating your friends’ daughters’ names with the K phenomenon might have made some people angry I’m sure :)

    among the new parents i know , there’s not much of an A prevalence ..

    My son is A too (ofcourse, since I don’t think you read my posts..you wouldn’t know!!)…but I think names starting with A are beautiful and the trend is not going away anytime soon. btw, wish you guys a happy married life in advance!

    Piker, I have nothing against ‘A’ people…have a brother incidentally with the same name as yours and am soon getting married to another ‘A’ person. About the roll call thingie, I was in the unfortunate position of being in the middle, last name or first name.

    Orchid, thanks :) and I’m sure your son has a beautiful name too but I was thinking about the other beautiful names starting with the other 25 letters.

    Err.. Not to be nit-picky.. but wouldn’t their roll calls have to do with their last names? So it is immaterial what they pick their names to be?

    On a side note- I have seen a rash of girls being born too. And I love it. Girls are more fun than boys :P

    Sakshi, I know but both my first and last name landed me in the middle. And of course, that friend was joking. Thanks for the nit-pick though. Keeps us honest :)

    And yeah, our family had a spate of boys so much that my dad now threatens us to give him a grand-daughter :)

    “A” names have always been common.. and even in our parents generation.. Have you forgotten Aashish already :p. He always stayed roll number 1. And he’s the first entry in my phonebook! :)

    But I think you would agree.. “P” names are the best..more so the “Pr” names :p :)

    Both our kids are ‘A’. We searched very hard through the alphabet to find good names but were unsuccessful.

    Parag, I know. I hear the same from other new parents but wonder why is it so? There are good names with other letters too, right?
