Death of a Laptop
The poor overburdened intelligent silicon finally died an anticlimactic death. It was fine and processed quite well in the morning but by early afternoon, it nearly breathed its last. All attempts are resuscitating by opening up its slick interiors and painfully unscrewing its cleverly hidden screws was in vain and all I was worried about at that point was my all-important data. Thankfully, the memory bank slid out easily and fit into one of its even earlier contemporaries. The process of backing up the enormous amounts of data can be painful and slow although the new-age devices such as a 256MB pen drive does make a few things easier.
I do wonder how I could make things work with my 540MB HDD on my crawling 486 PC just a decade back. But then we didn’t have the Internet back then and never had the strong inclination to store any wonderful graphic or image we encounter. Anyways, my overworked laptop finally gave way after faithfully serving me for more than 3 years in the era of rapidly evolving silicon. I might just be able to give it a new lease of life if I call Tech Support at IBM and on their recommendation, replace the keyboard. But I can easily get a contemporary “player” Thinkpad by pumping in a fistful of dollars more, as long as those dollars sport a Ben Franklin. In current state of things going horribly wrong, this was merely a tragedy waiting to happen.
Rest in Peace.
