Viewing Lunar Eclipse

If you are located in North or South America, Western Europe, or Africa do not miss the full lunar eclipse this Wednesday night i.e February 20th, 2008. As long as the weather cooperates, the eclipse will occur at a perfect time for viewing in most of the United States. The partial eclipse will begin at around 8:45pm EST with the full eclipse starting around 10:00pm [source]. Do not miss this celestial event if you can.

My previous total lunar eclipse viewing was more than 15 years back in India and this time around, I’m armed with a tripod and a 55-200mm lens to go with my Nikon D40. I’m sure Parag will be aiming his camera skyward too as he usually gets excellent results.

Update: Dang! It is a cloudy and misty night. Not a speck of sky visible let alone the moon. Sigh! Probably next time. Hope some of you got a glimpse. Share your photos please.

    It is clear today but given the erratic Texas weather, you never know. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for a clear sky.

    The weather here in Houston doesn’t seem to be permissible for a good viewing. I think Ash and I had sat out at Lenox once to see a Lunar Eclipse.

    I wish we had a 300mm lens… :(

    Sampada, I think I’ll walk out to the open field opposite our apt.complex to watch it. I hope it isn’t too cold. BTW, the ‘big moon’ photos are taken by a 2000mm lens but I’ll try to make do with my 200mm lens :)

    Ooh, thanks for this info. I remember “watching” a solar eclipse many, many years ago in Madras (disobeying all parental strictures and dire warnings) and it is a memory I cherish to this day. Magical! I hope the weather will co-operate here in New York.

    Wow, I’ve been watching the eclipse for the past 1 hour now – beautiful! (it’s now 10.30pm in New York). And I can see Saturn, bright and clear, to the left, and a little below, the moon. Ahh, bliss!

    Beautiful clear and not a cloud in the sky. But goddamn freaking cold. So I kept popping in and out. I missed the total eclipse part but caught everything else.

    I was at San Diego airport during the eclipse. I got a short peek through the clouds for a few minutes before it was full. It looked like a cookie that has been bitten. There was no way to take a photo. Had my camera but no other equipment.

    BTW, I was told that San Diego gets rain for about 5 days in the year and my stay covered those 5. :(
