The Dark Knight voted best movie ever (at IMDB)

The Dark Knight has been roundly appreciated by critics and audiences. I loved the movie too and given Heath Ledger’s amazing swan song performance probably overshadowed everyone else’s. The movie has zoomed to the top of the IMDB’s Top 250 movies with a rating of 9.5 disrupting The Godfather‘s long reign. The Dark Knight is excellent but better than The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption?

    Best comic book movie by a long shot. Not sure if it’s the best movie ever. But then again, although I personally think Shawshank Redemption deserving of the No. 2 (now No. 3) spot, there are quite a few who watched the movie with the expectation that comes with being No. 2 and were underwhelmed.

    At the end of the day, it is very subjective really and whilst I see little signs of the Dark Knight letting up in ratings, I do think over a period of time it will come down to about 9/9.1 — as we’ve seen, in the past, that imdb does tend to get skewed towards good recent movies (Ratatouille and Wall-E were in the high 9′s too). Let’s see if this stands the test of time.

    Aditya, I too think the rating will fall over time but it has already achieved a high 9 and might stay very close to the Godfather-Shawshank levels. It is undoubtedly the best superhero movie ever and even in terms of other aspects of movie-making like screenplay, storyline, soundtrack, etc. it is highly supreme. Highly engaging as well. The IMDB forums are rich with discussion regarding the next movies and potential villains.

    Better than Shawshank? Yes.
    Better than Godfather? No.

    I guess it will come down to second spot in a while by itself.

    Sorry about this off topic comment but I have a qn for you. Where/how did you buy your cruise tickets? I know all the websites and the rates are so identical. Is there one website which is better in terms of service or even price and deals? Or is a travel agent better in case there is some problem before the cruise starts?

    The price is not the issue here but who to buy from.

    Suyog, I dunno. I like Shawshank a lot and even Godfather II is ranked below the first one although I thought it was better.

    I thought it was better than Shawshank. Godfather is a tough call. Dark Knight is a good Mafia movie and a good comic book movie. DK lost steam in the last 20 minutes and became slightly jarring. God father was consistently good.

    Hawkeye, I’ve mixed feelings about it being better than Shawshank but they belong to different genres.

    Aditya, I guess so. I was waiting for it to hit the 100K mark. I don’t think it will slide below No.2 spot now. BTW IMDB says only votes from ‘regular voters’ count in this list. How do we know if we are regular voters? I’ve rated quite a few movies there.

    Bah, kids these days! Just yesterday there was an article which tried hailing Nolan as the greatest director alive.

    To all these, I say this, just wait for 26 years and see if you still think the same about the Dark Knight.

    No doubt, it is an amazing movie with a strong screenplay for a superhero movie and surprisingly good acting which has gone missing from this genre for past several years (possibly last time we saw a good acting from a superhero movie was also from Batman, Nicholson and Keaton), but to hail it as the bestest ever in just a week may be the definitive sign of fanboism.
