There are few countries like China that take special interest in spending resources on each athlete. And even then it might not be correlated with their GDP. Because countries that give too much importance to Olympic medals spend disproportionate amounts in training their athletes.

aanthirtyeights, honestly I wouldn’t give much importance to the GDP analysis because today many professional athletes train outside their country and simply represent them at the Olympics (Kristi Coventry for Zimbabwe, Cavic for Serbia, etc.)

There are few countries like China that take special interest in spending resources on each athlete. Say a country has a population of 5 and a GDP of 5000. It wins 5 golds. Another country has a population of 10000 and a GDP of 100000. It also wins five golds. In the latter case, the country has significantly lesser resources to spend on each athlete, whereas in the former case, there are more resources.

I really think one must normalise for per capita GDP. And if you thought that this was one way the Americans were interpreting the medal tally, check this one out from a Yahoo sports columnist.

The words of the Jamaican Olympic Association ring true in this context as to why some people in the world don't feel that others can be that good.

Patrix, well said. You missed the Gold" or something to that effect. I would love to see that ad again now.

I don’t know which olympics was this, but Nike came out with an ad saying “You didn’t win the silver.
