PhD Completion Rates

According to this Higher Ed article, I’ve a 63% chance of completing my PhD (see Social Sciences) within ten years [via]. But at least it is much better than my American colleagues. Inability to holding full-time jobs and restrictions on visa renewals probably explain the gap between internationals and Americans. Does it help if I add that my family especially my wife will skin me alive if I take ten years?

Helps a lot :) And the fact that a lot of Indian Ph.D candidates are married..
But the bigger picture is – most international students come to the US to earn a degree and start working. So the PhD is merely seen as a waystation, and people are eager to start work.

@Lekhni: Yup! At least the Indian mentality is see higher education as a means to livelihood and while not being bad, it is different from the American goal of personal ambition and drive to learn something new. It is obvious though that a PhD in fact leads to decline in average income except in perhaps computer science (thanks to Google).
