Excellent Journalism – Fatal Distraction

The power of journalism and quality writing is epitomized by this intense and moving article on the death of children in the back seat of a car [via]. The byline, “Forgetting a child in the back seat of a hot, parked car is a horrifying, inexcusable mistake. But is it a crime?” makes reexamine your first responses to such tragic accidents and makes you doubly cautious about making similar mistakes. The article strikes the perfect balance between highlighting facts and emphasizing emotion. We don’t have children yet we were shaken to the core after reading this article. Great job, Gene Weingarten.

Very well written article, this. I liked. But goodness, it's scary to think that it can happen to anyone. I've been guilty on more than a few occasions of being scatter-brained about fairly significant matters. And I once owned a plant which literally collapsed to its death because I had under-/over-watered it. I have a long way to go before I grow up to be responsible for human life!

What a horrible story…the question is if it was a crime or what? for me it depends upon how, and why of the circumstances. If it was intentional, then of course there was a crime committed but if no malice whatsoever, just an error in judgment (that nothing will harm the child), no crime but must undergo psychological checking.

Yes, this does give one the goosebumps. I had seen a similar incident on the news a couple years ago.

Patrix, have you changed the format? It's very chic to look at, but I for one find it a little cumbersome to read – and often to comment. I wonder if I'm the only one?

Only the comments system is different. It actually makes it easier not only for me to respond to comments but also lets other readers respond to any comment. It keeps the conversation streamlined. No complaints from anyone yet.

Oh ok…nice, in fact! I probably did something strange then; my mistake. It asked me for open id and the comment didn't get through. Hopefully I don't do the same thing the next time :P

Well, Open ID is for those who have it otherwise as you regularly do at comments will work too.
