Upgrading to Windows 7

Now that I’m a Mac convert, I wouldn’t bother about upgrading to Windows 7 which surprisingly has received rave reviews. But being part of an university has its perks and I’m getting a Windows 7 Upgrade license for $15. The problem is that it is an upgrade license and needs a licensed copy of the previous version (XP or Vista) during the clean install process. I have Windows XP on my Thinkpad T60 laptop and since the backup and restore discs are stored on the HDD itself (part of the Thinkvantage restore system), I don’t have an actual CD or DVD of Windows XP. So if I do a clean install and format my HDD to install Windows 7, I might be stuck in no-man’s land with a bricked laptop or at least the one that needs a full licensed copy of an operating system.

Any tips?

Usually your license key would be at the bottom of the your thinkpad with a sticker that mentions the XP Key. In any case, I believe the restore CD is on a different partition. You could still install Windows 7 cleanly on an existing partition couldnt you? If not the restore process should allow you to create backup installation disc as well. The software should allow you to make a backup image of windows xp (clean install image) so you can use it later on.

I was told the same thing by a colleague so will check if I can create a backup copy of the OS on a disc. And yup, it has the license key and serial no.on the back.
