Hulu to charge for content

Don’t cancel your cable yet. Hulu to charge for content soon. I knew it was too good to be true. Update: Now it seems the exec’s words were misconstrued and Hulu will remain free.

It’s misleading to say that hulu offered free content. One has to ask: free for whom? Like terrestrial channels like ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX, Hulu is implicitly charging its customers for its content in the form of commercials.

Admittedly there is no money changes hand, but there is a transaction taking place. The consumer watches commercials in exchange for the content.

If anything, Hulu is admitting that its business model is not working and will not have to resort to a fee-based model, a la Netflix, which is fine by me.

I never wanted free content and am willing to sit through ads on Hulu just like on TV. I like Hulu for the convenience of watching it whenever I can and not having to watch it live (much like a DVR). If they follow a Netflix model, it might work but if they charge per show, it might not. But currently, the traditional mentality and line of thinking still dominates TV execs decision making and they’ve to catch up to changing consumer preferences.
