Five Reasons Avatar Still Won’t Win Best Picture

While it may be true that only whiny snobs are still complaining about Avatar’s extravisual shortcomings, it’s worth noting that the Academy’s current membership is comprised primarily of whiny snobs.

[Source: New York Magazine] Now that Avatar has grossed more than a billion dollars and has received reasonable acclaim for breaking new ground in cinema whatever that means, Oscar buzz has started. But the self-proclaimed ‘King of the World’ couldn’t care less and NY Magazine tells us why it doesn’t stand a chance. I say, if Titanic could win, why not Avatar. I enjoyed the movie but didn’t think it was extraordinary. The 3D was used judiciously and for a change, I did not tear up (due to 3D effects not melodrama). So according to me, that’s a win. But then I don’t vote for the Academy Awards.

I think I said something along these lines on Twitter, but while Cameron is a technological genius and will go down in the annals of cinematic history as such, you can only do so much with a mediocre story. Titanic retold a very poignant story that captures our fears and heartstrings (even if the actors annoyed me); Avatar did not.

True. However, the Academy has been very inconsistent in handing out the Oscars. Some year, it will award it to an obscure movie that no one has seen and other years, it will bow down to public pressure and award it to the popular movies.

But James Cameron is Jesus. He can do no wrong; even if he’s wrong.
