India’s Oscar Entry for 2010 – Harishchandrachi Factory

After Shwaas, another Marathi movie, Harishchandrachi Factory is India’s official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2010 Oscars. The movie is about the making of India’s first movie, Raja Harishchandra, in 1913 by Dadasaheb Phalke.

Mokashi’s quest to make a film about the making of a film reflected the struggle faced by Phalke, who put 35,000 rupees of his own money into the project — a colossal sum in early 20th century India.

Like Phalke, no one was prepared to back a first-time director, so Mokashi re-mortgaged his home to raise the cash [source].

I hope I am able to see this movie but even if I’m unable to, I hope to lay my hands on a large-format poster for the movie which is one of the best I have seen for an Indian movie.

I am looking forward to see this movie. Given that few of my friends are a part of the project, I am particularly excited. Bravo to Marathi films! They are making their mark in the world…

Can you help me get a copy of this poster? Or at least a larger image size that I can print. I will pay for it. Also, let me know if you have a DVD copy of this movie. I doubt it will be released anywhere close to where I live.

I will ask my friend, if there is a DVD available and also about the poster and then will let you know!

Although it’s not available on DVD yet, I added it to my Netflix queue a long time ago. Hopefully since it’s an Oscar entry, they’ll release a DVD format of it. And yes, that’s a cool poster!

I didn’t even know about the movie until I read that article. Found it thanks to Nimbupani on Twitter. Rhucha says, she knows the ppl behind the movie so let’s hope we get the DVD before it is on Long Wait at Netflix.

The poster, by itself, creates expectations of a high quality movie :).
Hope to watch it soon, with sub-titles!

There seems to be some great talent and movies coming out of the Marathi film industry now and then…most of them theater talent. Reminds me of the great influence Marathi actors and theater had on Bollywood in the 70′s and 80′s.

Marathi movies were always good until before the Laxmikant Berde-Ashok Saraf comedy era (they were hilarious though). Marathi theater still remains strong, or at least as far as I know. This movie, as Divya had pointed out, has painstakingly recreated that era with an eye on detail so I expect it to be a must-watch.

The poster is def impressive; has a R K Laxman feel to it!

@Supremus: That’s exactly what I thought too. Last I saw a similar effect was the closing credits of Sherlock Holmes (2009)
