Twitter Local Trends

Twitter just activated my Local Trends option. Twitter features a Trending list on its sidebar indicating the topics that people are tweeting about. Previously, Twitter had the same list for all people irrespective of where you lived. With the exception of major global events, such a list was hardly useful for someone in Mumbai when lots of people in New York were tweeting about a local event. this option allows you to customize the Trending list to your location so that you are aware of the local news happening in real-time. If a non-local event is significant enough, people would be tweeting about it anyway so you wouldn’t be trapped in a bubble. Better still, Twitter could geotag your location (it already does) and use it to display trending topics within 5/10/100 miles of your location.

Although not all cities are on there yet and I had to select the nearest major city to my location, I’m sure Twitter will eventually have every city with at least 50,000 people as options. Next I hope, they separate those hashtags memes from other topics because frankly as fun it may be, I’m not interested in what people think is ghetto.
