Blogstreet India

Blogstreet, one of the blogosphere’s ranking sites has an India section now. I have been ranked 70th out of the 800-odd blogs that call themselves Indian. Incidentally, my old blog is ranked higher at 59th. When I investigated the anomaly a bit, I found that the blogs are ranked by outbound links i.e. number of blogs that link you. More the blogs that link you or blog-roll you, the higher your blog is ranked. So as it turns out, my old blog I suppose is linked by more people than my new one but that may also mean that most of them haven’t updated their links. To top it all, I have two web addresses that point to my current blog so it further breaks up the distribution. I also noted that some people who have listed my old blog have now ceased blogging.

Blogstreet, however does a good job of giving a good listing of Indian blogs. But I wish Blogstreet had a better way of ranking the blogs. I guess Blogstreet ranks only those blogs which register with them. Although I don’t really care about rankings (or do I?), such a method can lead to reciprocal linking expectations i.e. I will link you, you link me now. There are some really good blogs in the top 50 but there are some that are downright crappy and do not deserve their rank. All is a part of blog politics, like the present Bharateeya Blog Mela which I remember hosting few months back in its days of innocence.

Let us just get back to pure writing and vociferous commenting. That is much more fun. Don’t I sound like the guy with a bunch of sour grapes? Sheeesh.

Days of innocence or days of ‘self-pimping’ as Star would put it…haha! Those were good days.
And Congrats on the ranking… and let me clarify your confusion. You do care about ranking. Mere bas mein hota tho you would rank no.1.

Alpha – no use trying to hide anything from you but FYI you rank above me on Blogstreet and rightly so. LOL! that “self-pimping” thing was out in the open only becoz I mentioned the people who nominated the entries. I never got the Mela again…hehehe.

One of the reasons I don’t have a Blogroll anymore. Even if I did have, I wouldn’t use. Feeds are any time better.

It’s my first time at the Blog-mela and it kinda feels stupid :) (On a serious note, the voting may not be quite correct in that, you could use sets of of those ‘anonymously-browse’ sites and vote until kingdom come, and ask your friends to vote using those until another kingdom come ;)

Thanks for the info. And I just noticed that I have been linked on this site! :) Thanks.

Your blog is better than the ‘top bloggers’. Many of those blogs are designed well, but with content like RSS news feaders …

Hope this helps to get rid of the grapes:-)

Chetan – I don’t mind linking ppl if it helps them but I don’t ask for the favor to be returned. Regards BBM, once the voting got in the way, it started to stink. Initially it was just a collection of good posts and we came upon new blogs that we wouldn’t have otherwise. Lets hope it regains some sanity.

Kiran – You write well and hence do deserve a mention.

Aar – Thanks :) sour grapes sweetened long time back.

haha! I wonder who is the blog magistrate who decides all this. You know when I realised that blogging comes with its own politics, I was quite flabbergasted. The reason why I don’t believe in links. Its nice to get noticed, esp… for the new bloggers. But the shocking part is, lot of old timers still feel the need to advertise themselves unrelently. Maybe this is the only kind of fame they can ever get close to, which is again not a bad thing… but you gotto to admit, it does get to your head sometimes. Remember the Indibloggies and all that jazz! Remember the time when people begged people to go vote for them… remember the time when you desperately wanted someone to link you.

To tell you the truth, blogging wouldn’t have been as much fun without those things.

And thanks for the FYI, I wasnt aware of it..esp since I didnt register at blogstreet.

YAYYYYY! I BEAT YOU TO IT! How do I get to the top now?

Alpha – Politics infiltrates all places and activities that humans involve themselves in..now after that Pol.Sci 101 lesson, I also admit that blogging can be much more fun with all that underlying drama..remember the comment wars? strangely most of them involved Star..too bad she left. Its lot quieter now (I am gonna hear back from her soon)

as for the ranking, all you have to do to zoom to the top is to keep on writing :)

i did not know abt this….on checking..apna bhi naam hain udhar……surprised ho gaya apan

Hemya – You must have been linked by enough ppl to warrant a place out there…congrats :)

Linking is good if you’re using them for usability purposes (Isn’t that the first reason why linking started so people could ‘remember’?).

While that simple idea evolved into pushing the ranks up (thanks to Google) as by services as Blogstreet, it may not truly reflect their readership (but then catch 22, they’ll never know because not many publish their OPML files; reminds me I should =).

One of the reasons I don’t have a link bar or blogroll is because it was way too long (over 300 on my roll) to fit on a sidebar. That kind of number is only managed by a feed reader and that’s what I use. Usability first, politics or whatever don’t matter. I’d happy to remain unknown and enjoy the good blogs that I read and when possible comment (if I have something worthy to add).

Chetan – Of course. Thats true and will give that to you. But sometimes, to a lesser extent, a person’s blogroll depicts his taste in other blogs. But that too is not true anymore. Hmmmm…maybe I’ll get bored and knock that blogroll off sometime.

hmmm… I also realised that a lot of bloggers have put this blogstreet sticker on their blog and that tickled my curiosity enuff to give it a visit.. realised that my blog was already registered. I guess it automatically includes the links from the blogs it already has..
BTW I guess u wd need to remind ppl linking to you, to update their blogroll.. :-).. unless u want past winning over u :P

Twilight – I am just treating that site as a directory. Many of the ppl who had linked me earlier have ceased blogging so it wouldn’t matter.
