Defining an Apple Fanboy

In one of his melodramatic movies (aren’t they all?), Shah Rukh Khan had a confrontational scene with Amrish Puri (nope, not that one). In Subhash Ghai’s NRI-drama Pardes, Amish Puri in his characteristic threatening voice that would make anyone pee their pants asks, “kaisa rishta hai tumhara Ganga ke saath?” The ever-ready Shah Rukh Khan had his answer by-heart, “Vishwaas ka…Maan ka…Maryaada ka…Pooja ka….(dramatic pause) Pyaar ka…(everyone gasps with I-thought-they-were-friends,-yaar look)”. With a defiant look, he continues, “agar Ganga ki hifazat karna pyaar hai… to hai….hai.. hai.. pyaar hai.”

Does an Apple enthusiast has a similar feeling of initial hesitation and then a grand declaration with an explanation when it comes to describing his love for Mac products? Agar Mac products ko use kar karke accha lagta hai…to hoon…hoon…hoon…mein fanboy hoon (paging Farah Khan). So what makes a normal Mac user a fanboy? Sqrl tells me people who get all giddy when they meet Steve Jobs qualify. I would agree but then my brother is an equal parts fanboy of Bill Gates and Sachin ‘is-god’ Tendulkar (he considers me an Obama fanboy) and Sqrl is a self-professed Wal-Mart fanboy (and she doesn’t even live in Arkansas). So how would you define a fanboy in an age when you can officially become a fan of Amul Chocolates on Facebook? Am I a fanboy because I got an iPad and you are not because you just have a Macbook, iPod Touch, and an iPhone? What aren’t those people who say, I’m a PC and I made Windows 7 called Microsoft fanboys? And why does saying, I love using Macs instead of Windows on your little-read blog as opposed to a primetime TV commercial make you one? Or does owning a shitload of Apple products (not me but Louis Gray) qualify? When does a user or even an enthusiast become a fanboy? And why do most who really loves using Mac product begin their conversations with, I’m not a fanboy but…?

No, really, I want to know what makes one a fanboy? And so what if you are?

Your verbatim knowledge of shady Pardes dialogs disturbs me.

@gawker: You have an understanding for Indian classical music and I have a thing for melodramatic Bollywood lines.

We all have gifts. But not necessarily equal.

Pardes fanboy?? Btw is fan’boy’ gender neutral?:P

@Sqrl: More like a sidey dialogue fanboy. MPK and Mohabbatein provide the richest quotes. And well, it could be fanperson but that doesn’t sound as condescending :)

I own all books written by Kurt Vonnegut except for two or three because they didn’t appeal to me. In this case, I let my taste take importance over a senseless devotion to any damned thing someone creates. That’s the difference between fan and fanboy, or in my case, fangirl.

Microsoft and its products are pieces of shit and I am no fan, but that doesn’t automatically make Apple products manna from heaven.

In other words, fanboy = dittohead. Not appealing in seemingly rational people who have an eye for the future of technology.

@Maitri: Isn’t everything relative? If you hate MSFT products and use Apple products while saying that’s why you do then you get tagged with the fanboy label. I can see that some people are dittoheads but then isn’t that true for any product or brand (“I wear only Nikes”) so why the anger against Apple?

Fanboy = Apple marketing dept. Its one of those jobs that you pay to keep. And feel good about it.

I don’t have anger for Apple, but they really ask for it sometimes with their Second Coming Of Jesus branding and hype on every mediocre product they now release. Microsoft, with all of its pitfalls, doesn’t tag itself as the tech disruptor to end all tech.

From Pardes to Apple? Remind me to talk about segues to you the next time we meet, ok? :-)

  • http://www.ipatrix.com Patrix

@Supremus: I thought it was the marketing dept. that made fanboys. More hate you can whip up against them, more hype you generate.

@Maitri: It would help if others create a Jesus tablet apart from posting prototype videos every couple of months. If someone makes a better tablet, I’ll jump ship.

@Sampada: I have had many more drastic segues but yup, will remind you to hear your tale.
