MarsEdit Update

The Mac platform, unfortunately, lacks a decent free blogging desktop application and unlike Windows where Live Writer is by far the best I’ve seen. The only decent apps for desktop blogging on the Mac are Ecto and MarsEdit. I tried both and eventually settled on MarsEdit. It was in fact, one of the first desktop apps I bought after I purchased my new laptop. I haven’t been disappointed. MarsEdit provided an easy and seamless interface to WordPress. The Media Manager linked your Flickr account so you can easily insert images.

The reason for this post? Well, MarsEdit released a significant upgrade version 3.0 that offered a host of new features like Rich Text Editor (honestly, lack of this feature was in fact, a feature not a bug, at least for me), ability to directly access your iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom images in addition to Flickr with scheduled media uploads, and support for WordPress pages and custom fields. For existing users who bought MarsEdit before January 1st, 2010, version 3.0 is a paid upgrade which is a bummer. The price for new users is steep at $39.95 but if you are a serious bloggers (that is, if you are still blogging), then you ought to take a look (free trial for 30 days).

The real reason for this post was to clear the cobwebs off this blog and well, give MarsEdit 3.0 a test drive.

@Atul Sabnis: Technically it is not an upgrade to the existing software and you’ve to reinstall it. The upgrade cost for existing MarsEdit users is $14. You can continue to use your existing version if you don’t want to upgrade.
