Switching On The Lights

We switched on the lights to our soon-to-be new home last night. The home is not yet complete with laminate in the living, dining, study nook, and master bedroom and carpets in the guest bedroom still pending. There was a slight hitch when the builder did not install our selected appliances in the kitchen and they had to be re-ordered. Apparently, you’ve to be careful in dealing with people who are not yet completely comfortable with email. The builder forgot to forward our selections sent via email to the appliance store and the default ones got shipped and installed. After a little blame-game, things got sorted out and thankfully, our selections are in stock and will be installed today.

We bought the washer and dryer separately from Sears and had it shipped to the new home. Also, apparently Sears does not tell us that we need to buy a venting kit separately so that the guy delivering the products can install them on the same day. If Amazon can tell us when a certain percentage of buyers who checked out product X ended up buying product Y, I’m sure Sears can add a little logic to their website indicating what additional products we need to bundle in before we checkout. The necessary parts have been now ordered and (fortunately still free) installation is rescheduled.

On the flip side, the lighting fixtures are installed and after the city electrical inspection, we could finally see what they looked like. Although a tad expensive, the lighting upgrades were worth it. The recessed lights provided the perfect ambiance and contrary to dire warnings, yellow walls looked just fine in the light. The air-conditioning has also been installed and was humming nicely when we went over last night. The custom fans also look great so do the pendant lights over the kitchen sink and the island. The dining chandelier unfortunately was not available and will come in only after we close.

The completed home inspection is on Monday and despite starting early, the builder is in a mad scramble right now trying to install the flooring and put in the finishing touches. We close next Friday so hopefully all the confusion is behind us. As they say on back of the trucks in India, buri nazaar waale tera mooh kaaala :)

@Supremus: Yeah. I have been posting pictures on my Flickr but they’ve been kept private for family only. But once it is complete, I’ll definitely share some on this blog.

Congratulations! So is your home LEED certified? *grin*

@Amit: Thanks. And although LEED can be applied to residential homes, it is primarily used for commercial structures. Our home is a Good Cents Home. But I guess you weren’t expecting that answer.
