Indians are treated like children over alcohol

"There is no denying that alcohol is a problem in India. But banning booze outright has been proven not to work. Apart from converting what could be taxes for the government into profits for bootleggers (as in Gujarat), there is also the problem of illegal brews that often blind or kill their clients ."

While not commenting on the causation-correlation problem that gets alcohol blamed for social ills, banning anything seems to be the solution for everything the government wishes we don't do regardless of their right to do so.

The issue is not even about the “right thing to do”, whatever that may mean. The issue is about doing something that works. The response of the government is dogmatic at best. there really is very little introspection or evaluation of the consequences of their policies/actions. It is the same thing with reservations for SC/STs. There is little evidence that such reservations in education and government jobs actually brings about social equality. But the government couldn’t be bothered by things such as truth, efficiency, and sound governance. And there we have it :)

@Semantic Overload: I was talking about the government’s right to impose standard for moral behavior and to regulate products that it thinks affects such behavior. That said, since we do it all the time at work here in the U.S., program evaluation (process or outcome) is almost non-existent in India

@Patrix: If the government assumes that right to impose a stanard and enforcement for moral behavior, then it is extremely hypocritical about it. If alcohol is banned due to alleged immorality, then what is the excuse for legalizing tobacco? Besides, all excuses for ‘regulation’ are pretexts for licence raj anyway. Why are we even talking about this? Its a futile exercise anyway :)
