Future of Tablet Forms?

Netbooks were an established consumer-electronics market with devices that people thought were pretty cool, but often frustrating and with serious shortcomings and design flaws.

Then this happened:

Marco Arment predicts the form of future tablets using the smartphone analogy. Imitation is indeed the highest form of flattery. It is a win-win for consumers and imitation is fine but you would wish other companies would get their innovation groove on at least sometimes. Ironically, the "We were there first" argument is used most by Apple haters in touting multitasking features in smartphones.

I think HP, Dell, and others are already jumping on the bandwagon with WebOS and Android based tablets on the horizon. I don’t think anyone can argue that Apple (and by Apple I mean Steve Jobs) has been the innovator in almost all aspects of consumer computing and electronics market right from MAC 85 to iPod to iPhone to the iPad. And yes, the future of tablet forms has been set by Apple’s runaway success with iPad.

@Semantic Overload: That’s exactly my point. I don’t understand why can’t companies other than Apple lead the way and innovate instead of reverse-engineering and imitating everything that Apple does? It leads to complacency and over-reliance on one company to show how to do things differently. Amazon is the only one I can think of who has been an exception with the Kindle although MSFT has been doing great work with the XBox
