100 Years of Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand, one of the foremost “philosophers” of the 20th century celebrates (posthomously, of course) her 100th birthday today. She is the author of my all-time favorite books, The Fountainhead (a lingering memory of my architecture days). “The picture above is Frank Lloyd Wright’s unbuilt design of a home for Ayn Rand. He is said to have been Rand’s model for Howard Roark in The Fountainhead…Warner Brothers tried negotiating with Wright (who admired “The Fountainhead”) to create the designs that Gary Cooper’s Roark would build in the film version” [via NY Times].

I find much of Rand as well as Wright embodied in Howard Roark – steadfast idealism, utopian exhortations and unwavering individualism; something that can only be aspired for. Yazad has an interesting collection of quotes from and about her life.

Never read her books. I was always intimidated by the size and subject. Maybe, it is time to get over that and give it a read.

Parag – You should! Directly jump into the Fountainhead and then move on to We, the Living and Atlas Shrugged.

Glad to find fellow admirers of Ayn Rand. Until I read The Fountainhead I never thought that I could ever have a favourite book.

It was within a matter of a few days that I was introduced to the writings of two of the greatest philosophers I have ever come across. One was Ayn Rand, the other was Jiddu Krishnamurthy. Jiddu was a much more complete philosopher, and if was not a staunch rationalist could well have started a religion of his own with his very powerful and influential views.

I am going to line-up ‘The Fountainhead’ in my audible.com queue. I find it easier to listen than read english.

Parag, if the size of Atlas or Fountainhead intimidates you, read Anthem. It’s a small novella of around 130 pages. Or try We the Living, her first and most autobiographical novel.

For the New Intellectual maybe a good start as well — it’s a collection of excerpts from Rand’s novels.
