Filmfare goofs up…Why is that surprising?

I gave up watching or keeping track of Filmfare (or the other sundy Zee Cine, Screen, etc.) Awards some time back. But not too long ago, I religiously watched the annual Filmfare Awards. Eventually I did realize stupid crassness of a sycophantic publication just sucking up to the loud filmstars. Well-deserved movies were overlooked in favor of vulgar and insanely stupid box office winners. They should have rather called them box-office awards. But Filmfare managed to even solve that predicament. They introduced a Critics Award section, for almost all categories. So in reality, the Best Male Actor (Popular) went to some hamming actor who had raked in the moolah at the box-office whereas the Best Male Actor (Critics) was the real deal. The fact that Aamir Khan was not awarded a Filmfare until his over-the-top melodramatic role in Raja Hindustani is testimony enough. He rightly refused to attend any such ceremonies. The Academy in Hollywood finally nominated one of his movies.

This year, however, Filmfare has managed to surpass its stupidity. Udit Narayan has been nominated in the Best Playback Singer (Male) category for the title track of Main Hoon Na. Udit Narayan never sung ANY song in Main Hoon Na. Poor Sonu Nigam was robbed of his work. But he didn’t have to worry; he already was nominated twice in the same category. After the corrections and apologies, he is now nominated thrice out of five nominations. Any guesses, who will win? Indian Idle in full glory.

If that wasn’t enough, "There are 3 instances of an actor being
nominated in more than one category for the same film. Abhishek
Bachchan finds a nomination in both – the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and
‘Villainous Role’ categories for his performance in Yuva. So is the
case with Priyanka Chopra who is nominated in both categories for
Aitraaz. Also Akshay Kumar has multiple nominations in the ‘Supporting
Actor’ and ‘Comic Role’ categories for Mujhse Shaadi Karogi." [Source: India FM].
Does Bollywood lack enough talent that we can’t find five decent
performances in an industry that makes most number of movies in a year?
Do movies like Aitraaz and Mujhse Shaadi Karoge bring to mind great
performance when you think of them?

I am truly ashamed to direct anyone to the best of Bollywood if that means watching the Filmfare Awards.

PS. And what was that Kareena dance items for her sister, Karishma
Kapoor last year? You could be mistaken for thinking that Karishma had
died and the dances were in her memory. She must have died after seeing
the dances though.

The nominations in Filmfare were ridiculous this year, 2005. It is clear that every year the awards commitee is losing its dignity. Most of the categories missed on some great performances and had some useless ones. For example, there was no mention of Abhijit jee’s nomination for the Main Hoon Naa song ‘Tumhen jo maine dekha’ in playback category. Instead there were three Sonu Nigam songs. Atleast ‘Tumse Milke dilka’ could have been chucked out. Udit Narayan had two good entries one of which deserved this year’s filmfare but he didn’t get that. Jatin-Lalit’s Hum-Tum score was such a big hit and the numbers were so well yet they were not nominated in Music-Director’s category. Ridiculous! And they have always missed this award inspite of getting nominated previously for great musicals.
It is a request to Filmfare commitee that from next year onwards, please do not make yourselves a laughable stock by such foolish nominations.
