Who reads blogs anyways? And how many?

It is Sunday and no better time than to scratch your own back. Kevin Drum presents some more blog research. I have blatantly flicked the table below from Political Animal but read his entire post for a more analysis. Original report was compiled by Gallup so the findings can be considered as valid.

Note that these figures are for America where average readership is higher; offline or online. The figures for India are definitely lower. The Internet hasn’t crept in the Indian psyche as an essential tool much less a news-gathering medium. But on the other hand, even 1% of population involving in online reading adds up to more than ten million people; one advantage of having a large population. My mother just recently has started reading my blog and even clicks on the comments once in a while but I doubt she sees other blogs. I am not sure if the younger generation is reading off the Internet either. I just hope they are reading something more than those huge billboards off the roads.

Infact the number of readers (print or internet media/blog) are low in the sub-continent. Because the visual media (cinema/TV) is dominating everybody’s life. With more and more TV channels, and slow growth of Internet (except India) people are losing the habit of reading. They do not even read newspapers when there are options of 24hr news channels.

I hope that one day through internet human beings can have a total information/entertainment package. They will read newspapers/blogs for information and active interaction in reaction to those information. They will be able to watch customized TV programs and movies. So readers in a broad sense will increase.

Rezwan – I guess the concept of reading will change as the Internet adapts to the changing attention span of the readers. No one is interested in reading/hearing about long-winding report; they rather read/listen to short blurbs. Blogs just personalize your reading experience and bring down analysis of complex issues to the bare minimum. Lets hope the Internet permeates to all corners of the sub-continent.
