Much Ado about Anthem

I think fondly of a day when I can open any news site and not read something insanely stupid about Indian politics. But thanks to our dear forever alert denizens, it has forever remained a dream. The latest controversy is about the national anthem. Some smart alec has deduced that since Sindh is no longer a part of India, we should delete the Sindh reference from our national anthem (wonder why nobody thought of it earlier?). While admitted the soundness of their illogical reasoning, my dear Sanjeev Bhatnagar, it is a literary work; a simple song that we sing standing up and get teary-eyed if we see a flag fluttering in the distance. Any other song if called the national anthem would evoke similar emotions; and we have plenty of heart-rending patriotic song including the famous Aye Mere Waton ke logon, whose claim to fame is that it reported brought tears to Nehrus’ eyes. Well, the song is literally instructional and Nehru listens when he is told to cry.

Anyway, I digress. Should all Sindhis in India rename themselves as ; (sorry, words fail me), to humor the petitioner? For once, the Congress said something sensible that “any alteration of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s composition would “almost destroy” it”. However, the petitioner didn’t stop at removing the Sindhi reference; he stated that “the Pakistan government could raise an international dispute over inclusion of Sindh in India’s National Anthem and pleading for inclusion of the word Kashmir substituting Sindh.” Yeah, right! That should silence the Pakistanis.

Somewhere in the plush Karachi villas, an army general must be thinking, “hmmmm; that kaafir has a point, we should put that point in our terrorism manual.” It is already enough that we don’t stand up to their terror tactics, at least stop giving them ideas for stupid future grumblings. While we are at it, if you notice carefully, the anthem also honors Dravid. Tendulkar must be damn pissed (it’s a joke, dumbos; I know who Dravidians are). It almost reminds me of a crackpot conspiracy theory that the national anthem was in fact, meant to honor the Prince of Wales. Imagine the pie in our face, if that was true? We have been paying obeisance to a dead monarch all this while; all those tears for nothing?

By this logic, they should delete the entire anthem, as the reference is to George the fifth as the “bharatbhagyavidhata”

    Funny post Patrix :D

Yeah, you’re right; the national anthem used to be a tedious bore in school when we used to ratto it, but in recent years its proved to be emotional and heart-wrenching …

…hmmm, I never think of myself as overtly patriotic, but the strength of emotion these songs induce prove me wrong.

Alpha – Messin with ya? I help you out by deleting your extra comment and yeh ilzaaaam :( anyways your tvacha and goosebumps was a new low even by my PJ standard :)

  • http://ashujo.blogspot.com Ashutosh

I don’t know. I have heard from many people that this is the case. Do you know that it is not true?

  • http://ipatrix.com Patrix

Queer – and people think we aren’t funny :)

Ashutosh – I mean, yeah I think it isn’t. It would have be replaced if it was found true. Heck, they changed VT’s name just it had a English name.

I don’t know. There are several websites which say that it was dedicated to George 5 and the Queen when they visited India in 1919. Apparently Motilal Nehru included these lines. I guess the object of the song simply changed after independence, but I am sure that many could have taken objection to making it the anthem that time.
About the change of name of VT, I think it was more of a convenient tactic on the part of SS (ironic..) et. al. to parade their supposed nationalism.

Ashutosh – I tend to view such conspiracy theories with skepticism…remember the supposedly NASA moon landing hoax, the Taj Mahal built on a temple, etc. But still Vande Mataram would have made a better anthem simply because of its popularity and relevance to the freedom struggle.

    hahahaha, that dravid joke killed.

oh god, i need some air in my room.

Anki – LOL! Just saved it from being a PJ although ur sis still thinks it is.

i think india should remove the name of sindh from national anthem as it is not part of india anymore .and if anyone says that sindhis are in india so it reffers to them then in india there are people from china, israel, japan srilanka, nepal, bhootan etc so u will put name of all countries.
