Quit while you are ahead?

The question Indian blogosphere will be asking for the next couple of days: Why did Kiruba Shankar quit? Of course, he has his reasons.

But generally speaking, is blogging still considered a waste of time that people just abandon their blogs at the slighest shift in priorities? Is blogging considered that frivolous that some of the most prolific bloggers have quit in full steam, or they just do not want to get bored of blogging and quit to "savor the times"? While elsewhere bloggers are quitting their jobs and blogging full-time, we are going the other way. If I could I would write a nifty javascript that would calculate how soon you would quit. Better than knowing when you will die.

Heck, I just might join the bandwagon in the future. But not yet.

PS. pssssst…did the pressures of hosting the Mela get to him?

UPDATE: Instapundit says "HANGING UP THE BLOG: I’m not in this place, but I understand. When it’s not fun anymore, it’s time to quit."

UPDATE#2: Kiruba has in fact, pulled off a sick April Fools’ joke.

Don’t everyone keep harping about the need to quit when you are the top, rather than fading into oblivion and still hanging on by a thread?
If it applies to cricket and tennis, I think it should apply to blogging too.

Once a blogger, always a blogger. I learnt that after my quitting gimmick.:) He’ll be back. More than Jivha, I feel bad to see Kiruba go. Nothing against J, just needed to take a stab at him…fingers were itching. How I miss him, only I would know.

TOL – So now blogging is a sport? Heck, yeah I exercise my fingers everyday.

Alpha – I actually would prefer Jivha although nothing against K either. Kiruba was a personal-post blogger that got him many readers; I suppose more than Jivha. But now too many ppl have written about Kiruba quitting, it would be ego-crushing to return.

Patrix, I think you of all people should know that blogging can become a passion, an addiction , and dare I say it, even an obsession ? *grin*

So I guess some people stop cos they’re bored, some cos they don’t have the time and blogging isnt a top priority, and the the rare few who stop because they dont want blogging to become a preoccupation, taking over their lives.

Let them be, Patrix. i know it seems illogical to your type-pad driven soul, but let them be *grin*

aah! the taunts of a scorned girlfriend. Patty, seriously..I gave up once just for the same reasons Kiruba did..but hey I wasn’t half as popular. So I can totally understand his point of view. These days I have more control over blogging and dont let it ruin my other plans. I plan to live so I can blog about it.

Hey Patrix, stop giving ‘the devoted readers of your blog’ ;-) the occasional scare. Take a break if you want to, but keep writing. I still miss Jivha, even if I didn’t agree with whatever he said. cIt’s not about thoughts matching. I think the beauty of blogging lies in taking the initiative to write and revise what one feels/thinks.

    Hey,

I may be the most inappropriate person to say this, but perhaps ‘detachment’ is the best way to longevity.

Ash – An obsession that I can quit any time; I know smokers say the same thing. But as Kiruba said, I’ll quit as soon as I stop enjoying it.

AlphaI plan to live so I can blog about it. Thats like a true blogger…have a life and blog about it. As long as you don’t feel compelled to blog, you are fine.

Passerby – The [blogging] world didn’t end when Jivha quit and it won’t when I do so too. But as I said, not yet but when I get bored or more important things crop up, I will.

Nitin – Aiila! You are talking like Buddha now. Guess your blog has already attained Nirvanic status, so you don’t have to worry :)

I think Passerby got the whole idea of blogging captured in a perfect nutshell. It is all about giving some order and expression to those scrambled thoughts whipping around inside our heads. A thought isnt complete until its expressed. Right ?

Alpha, lol@ scorned gf…naaaah, your patty is a good boy and has his priorities straight *grin*

i presume all of you have seen kiruba’s fool’s day volte face :)

Ash – Now that you know Kiruba pulled off an April Fools stunts, whoz the most obsessed one? But thanks for the vote of confidence, that should keep Alpha ki bachhi quiet for a while :)

Aditya – thanks for the tip, dude. It was a very lame joke.
