Habemus papam

Good news     : We (they?) have a pope.
Bad news        : He is a hard-liner. Tsk tsk…that’s what we needed right now. Another conservative.

Anyway, congrats to all Catholics for electing a new pope in double quick time. Pope Benedict XVI is a "simple, humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord".

Ha! those were my exact thoughts about him being a hardliner…but apparently, he was “progressive minded” for a while before…Now, if only I so much as knew what being a liberal or a hardliner meant in the context of a church!

Spaceman – Yeah! Actually to expect the Pope of the Catholic Church to be liberal is asking for too much. But in these times of religious conflict, the Pope better be ready to make ideological compromises

He’s 78 so don’t expect his benediction for too long!

Yazad – Methinks this papacy is merely ceremonial. We might have another papal election in the next 5-7 years.

some of his social ideas are said to date to somewhere in the 18th century. I guess that is what is meant by “liberal” in this context.

Harini – Heres’ what he had to say about other religions not too long ago:

“Hinduism, he said, offers ‘false hope’; it guarantees ‘purification’ based on a ‘morally cruel’ concept of reincarnation resembling ‘a continuous circle of hell’…

In 1997 Ratzinger annoyed Buddhists by calling their religion an ‘autoerotic spirituality’ that offers ‘transcendence without imposing concrete religious obligations’… The Cardinal predicted Buddhism would replace Marxism as the Catholic Church’s main enemy this century.”

Ideas dating back to the 18th century would be liberal…thank heavens we don’t have a Dark Ages pope.

That’s what i mean – 18th century – they were still killing heathens and pagans:).
