Fine Unmatched
Rerngchai Marakanond, former Thai Central Bank governor is fined 186bn baht ($4.6bn) for his ‘role’ in the country’s 1997 financial crash. It is unlikely, of course that he will pay up but his position is likely to remain empty henceforth. What’s more, "The court also ordered Rerngchai to pay 7.5% a year interest, retroactive to July 2, 1997, the date of the central bank’s last currency transaction, although the court limited total interest charges to 62 million baht." Now that’s some serious fine!
Can we similarly fine the Gandhi family for lost opportunities before the reforms? Heck, we can wipe out our deficit almost instantly. Of course, they can definitely afford to pay up. Forgotten Bofors so soon?
