A Literary Map

I am currently reading Mumbai, Meri Jaan: Writings on Mumbai — a collection of poems and prose pieces by some of the biggest names in literature (heck it even has a recipe for Bombay Duck, a fish unfortunately that I can’t get in Atlanta).  Edited by Jerry Pinto and Naresh Fernandes, it mentions many interesting aspects on either current or past Mumbai life. It is amazing that how many times Bombay has been mentioned in national and international literature (movies are a different story altogether).

I chanced upon this literary map of Manhattan and was amazed to see so many references to the cityscapes that the Big Apple (now called the World’s Second Home) proudly flaunts. I am sure we can make a similar map for Bombay and after seeing so many bloggers deeply interested in books, I bet we can find help right here on the blogosphere. If anyone can code up a similar map thingie for Bombay and then invite contributions from others, I bet it will be an interesting exercise.

Anyone up for the challenge?

heyyyy, I am reading this too (along with two others) … is not a book to be read at one go though – just oick up at random and read sometimes I dont even bother to complete the piece :)
Uma MD had linked to some writing by Paromita Vohra and I was telling her (Uma) about Vohra’s piece in BMJ – that was somewhat how I imagined life in Bombay would be – cool and Manhattanish – no inkling of the long local journeys and 15 hour work days!

Count me in! but I have no idea what you are talking about, or what the project entails.. but what the heck.. would love to be part of anything Mumbai.. better than just whining. ‘mummy I want to go home’..

Charu – I have been reading it off and on for about a month now. It always seems romantic to read snippets of city life from a book. Suketa Mehta’s Mumbai is harsh and closer to reality.

Sqrl/ – I can’t code for nuts either. Maybe for something more significant :) I’ll let you know if some techie is interested in taking up the challenge.

i miss bombay ………..it was my home for 22 years……….and really isnt the same today…….did renaming it mumbai change it?

M – Changing the name to Mumbai did signified cultural wars. I believe Shiv Sena’s rule and later effect on policing cultural values eroded the city’s spirit but its not completely gone yet. I haven’t been home in almost 3 years so I guess you might have to get a more updated opinion.
