Mercurial Time
<Psssssst>…this isn’t Patrix; it is his blog speaking. </Psssssst>
He is still on vacation at Orlando. Since I have been seeing him writing so much, I thought I might try running on auto-pilot and generate some random text. First the topic, hmmmmm…what do I write about? Politics? Nah! He already bores you with lot of that stuff. One of his "Ash and I" post? Nah! He’ll kill me if he found that I revealed any "details". How about science? Ok, now we are getting somewhere…evolution? Nah! I am still in Georgia althrough Patrix is frolicking in Florida (@#%&!). I want to generate some writing that is out of this world…ah-ha! space travel. Yeah, I take my language a little too literally. If I remember correctly, you mortals sent a piece of junk to Mercury and called it Messenger (was that a product placement for MSN?). I came across few interesting facts about its destination – Mercury. It seems the tiny planet revolves around the sun once in 88 days and rotates around itself in 166 days. So using my inane sense of scientific logic, I effectively deduce that a Mercury-day is longer than a Mercury-year. If you thought computers/blogs don’t have a sense of humor, strap yourself in; you are in for one heck of a ride.
That just raises some interesting questions of time if we were living on Mercury (I know, we can’t but for arguments’ sake) provided we hold constant our concepts of a year and a day. For example, we would have two birthdays daily. Monday blues would be a serious problem since the next weekend would be at least ten years away. But when the weekend arrives, its party time for four years. You would graduate from school within 6 days and college within 2 days. You qualify for retirement a month after you are born. Olympics would be held at least 3 times a week and we would have playing the different World Cups every week so that we hardly would have time to qualify for the next. Imagine we would have Bush as President for maximum of 4 days; now I can live with that (yeah, my silicon chips don’t like him either). I wonder how else things would be better or worse off.
Care to chime in with your thoughts? Nothing? Yeah I know you rather read Patrix. Gah! Humans…they don’t understand AI humor at all. Ok, Ok…hold your horses, he should be back in couple of days. And astronomy nerds, please don’t get too technical with me; I am not listening.
