Highest Judicial Position

The press in America is agog with the news of the latest Bush nomination to the Supreme Court. Battlelines are already been drawn between Republicans and Democrats going into the nomination season as Justice Renquist nears retirement too.

When was the last time we Indians got so excited about a judicial nomination in India? Does our press (or for that matter, do we) know who our Supreme Court justices are? I had to Google it to find the answer. Shame on me, too.

Update: “In one poll, only 9 percent were able to identify William Rehnquist as Chief Justice after he had been on the court for 17 years. More people were able to identify Judge Wapner of the People’s Court” [source: Public Opinion on Supreme Court [via]. I guess people out here care little about their Supreme Court Justices as well.

    Patrix,

Althought I am not very confident, but from what I read in american blogs, Appointement in America is a highly political affair.
However, in India, legislature has minimal control over judiciary, in fact, if I am not incorrect it’s judiciary itself which recommends the next appointement,on the basis of seniority and experience, which in usual times is accepted by legislature
But if you are looking for some masala, I think you can hark back to good old days of Smt Indira Gandhi, when she superseded some seniors to appoint her favourite (I forget the names)
