Increased Infiltration
Like every summer when the snow starts melting in the Kashmir valley, infiltration from across the border has stepped up. It is almost like the terrorists cannot heed the commands of their higher power. I am not talking about Allah but rather their “emotional supporters” in Islamabad. If, as Musharaff says, the Kashmir issue can be solved in one week, then as India has always demanded, the infiltration should gradually decline and not step up. So far, the security forces have managed to keep most of the infiltrators at bay but unless Pakistan shows a determined resolve against harboring terrorist training camps under the guise of “emotional support”, no real progress toward solving the Kashmir issue can be achieved.
But raising this issue repeatedly with the Pakistani government is like
flogging a dead horse; partly the blame lies with the Indian government
who do not want to risk the progress made on the peace process. But we
are merely treating the symptoms and not paying attention to the root
cause of the problem. Pakistan can back out of the peace process
anytime and use the still-thriving terrorist camps to foster trouble
albeit on a greater scale. Of course some of the camp graduates make it
as far as Ayodhya for their summer vacation…can be a killer one too. Addressing the National Press Club in Washington, Manmohan Singh minced no words making his displeasure with Pakistan clear and Mushraff had to make amends by criticizing the terrorists’ violent means for a change.
