Why are you apologizing?

Prime Minister apologizes for 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Is it just me or does anyone else also think that he shouldn’t be the one apologizing? The anti-Sikh riots were the handiwork not of the government but of a national party that was in power. I haven’t seen any apologies from other Congress leaders, especially the ones implicated in the Nanavati Commission Report. Heck, it would even make sense if Sonia Gandhi choses to apologize since she is the president of the party in question. Manmohan Singh being apologetic is like America’s black president (yeah I know, fat chance) apologizing for slavery. It just doesn’t make sense or assuage any hurt sentiments, not to mention dead relatives.

    But the carnage that we witnessed in 1984 or any of the other year is not the end of horror.
    India is destined to suffer more of this madness, unless we stop sweeping everything under carpet and confront it boldly.

    I was thinking the same. I guess Manmohan is apologizing on behalf of the government, but it does seem odd that a Sikh is apologizing for the persecution of Sikhs.

    I was in Punjab when the riots started in 1984. Of course I was too small to understand it, but through the years I have been reading about the carnage. The issue has been swept under the carpet for too long. Although Manmohan Singh seems to have apologised on behalf of his party, it doesn’t seem to be the sentiment of the other members of his party.
    He is a sincere and honest man stuck with the wrong people.

    I totaly agree with you patrix. It would have been much better if Sonia Gandhi has appologised instead of our namesake Prime minister. Did you notice that Jagdish Tytler send his resignation to Sonia Gandhi instead of Manmohan Singh. What the heck the current president seems to have more power than our prime minister.

    I thought the Italian apologized sometime back when she went to some “Gurudwaara” didn’t she?

    and as for the Jagdish Hitler, Bagula Bhagat and not so “Sajjan” folks… who wants their apology … just justice (no pun intended)

    Seema, I can understand his frustration. People will hardly consider his apology even though he might have said it direct dil se.

    Kuttan, I read that. Manmohan must have been seething in quiet anger but he can’t do much, can he?
