Coming to a Blog near you: Bharteeya Blog Mela

Bhaiyon aur Behno, Meherbaan, Kadardaan, Pehlwaan; aapke computer mein dhoom maachane aa raha hai 32nd Bharteeya Blog Mela.

Ok, now that I got all that corny stuff out of my head. Let me put that in legible English. I will be hosting the 32nd edition of the famed Bharteeya Blog Mela this week. To those, who are unaware of this phenomenon, it is basically a compilation of the Indian blogs that are nominated by bloggers for being examples of good writing and enjoyable reading. The only two rules that make sense to me are:

posts must either be made by Indians or focus on India or Indians
every post that is nominated gets included

The overarching objective of the blog mela is to introduce previously unknown bloggers to another set of bloggers and build a tiny community of literary exchange. Yup, blogging is serious business but only serious goal is to have fun. Earlier the blog gurus have explicitly blocked personal posts but I was given the leeway of opening the door a wee bit for personal posts. But as always, there are certain implicit rules. Personal posts should expand beyond the regular Mac Chronicles i.e. “I ate a Big Mac today and met all my lovely friends”. But if you found some pesticides or worms in your Mac and created a big ruckus and somehow managed to pen it down beautifully, it makes for a perfect blog mela entry. I hope you don’t take my suggestion too seriously though; it’s just a thought, I don’t want Big Mac suing my ass. Although every nominated post makes it through, I still reserve the right to dismiss the Mac Chronicles blog entries. I believe that personal post do hold interest and exemplify excellent literary skills too. So for a change, Personal Posts are allowed. Other administrative rules include:

Personal posts, political rants, technology utopias…anything goes provided it is written well.
Only posts made between 10/01/03 and 10/07/03 are eligible for this Mela
Send in permalinks to the individual blog entries only, not just the URL. If the permalink is not working, send me the title and date of the blog entry.
Email me the permalinks at patrix99@rediffmail.com latest by 10/09/03 1700 hrs EST.
You can nominate your own posts or someone else’s

So feel free to exercise your vote in blogger democracy.

Chris Locke writes about “Indigo Children,” a meme reported on by the New York Times. The Indigo idea sounds like it pushes a whole bunch of buttons all at once — New Age, angels, the paranormal, child-worship, ADD. If it had some anti-child-porn hysteria about it, it’d be perfect. As one of the people in the NYT article says, this is basically the same social world view as Harry Potter’s muggles v. wizards set up.

Anyway, it is a great example of what Chris has been talking about over at Mystic Bourgeoisie, America’s Toughest to Spell weblog
