A Welcome Rainy Day

It was a pleasant rainy day in College Station today. Usually, I am no fan of rainy days but this was a welcome relief. The fall chill hasn’t made its presence felt yet and it is still summer weather down here. College Station got almost 3 inches of rain today and although it pales in comparison to the monsoons back in Mumbai, it had all the bearings of one. It was 10am and you could be easily mistaken for thinking that the dawn is still breaking especially through the loosely shut blinds. Peering through the blinds, you could see that it was nice and dark; the rain was coming down in sheets and one could just sit in and sip a hot cup of tea staring at the rain. I guess coffee would do too. But a sadly a ‘work’ day lay ahead.

I even skipped class. I tried; but five minutes in the rain was all I needed to give up on the idea of being a sincere student. Instead, I just drove down to my favorite cafe and buried myself in books; electronic ones to be specific. So much for not trying to be a sincere student, eh? I swear I am going to opt for research hours next semester and put off my classes for later. The skies cleared for a brief moment to give those sun freaks some hope but darkened again as the weather forecast in my laptop’s taskbar kept popping warnings of a severe weather alert. As long as a brownout wasn’t in the offing, I was okay with any amount of rain today; we sure needed some.

Not a bad day at all. I prefer the days when I can plan my stuff and work at leisure instead of being someplace where I am expected to be. No wonder, professors love their job, not because of sabbaticals and summer breaks but for the flexibility of their working hours.
