Another Move

This blog has been silent for the longest ever since it was started more than three years ago. Admittedly, it is partly attributed to declining interest and passion for blogging but other personal reasons are largely to blame. The last month has been that of drastic changes in our personal lives and it has certainly been for the better; at least in the long run. That change led me to abandon my rickety and typical student-apartment housing near the university and seek a decent apartment complex elsewhere in town - away from the creaky floorboards and no-dishwasher kitchen.

Following some hiccups trying to find a replacement and dealing with an obdurate non-desi roommate, Ash and I had a nice time trying to find an alternate apartment in this small town. Due to the presence of a large student body and associated staff and faculty, the housing market in College Station is virtually a sellers’ market. There are literally thousands of housing choices with a wide price range but the deal and bargains that you would get in a typical large city are few and far between. But since the demand is quite high, we had to make a quick decision and sign the lease within few hours. It also reminded me of my professor who confessed seeing 14 houses in a day and closing on the same day. At least we had to sign just a seven-month lease that would give us leeway later. But as we found out post-move, moving is not something that you want to do frequently even if it saves a few bucks.

Although moving is much easier and organized here in the US, trust me you don’t want to do it often although we might have to. After hunting and begging for cardboard boxes and cartons, packing our meager but nevertheless plentiful [for students] possessions was an arduous task. It is the many small things that give you headaches as compared to the big bulky stuff that you can easily dump in the UHaul truck. Also, I am surprised that I seem to have at least thrice as many clothes as Ash does thus dashing any stereotypes of women dominating closet space. But as loathe we are to throwing away even the insignificant things, we managed to stuff at least 5 huge bags of used clothes and donated them to the local Goodwill. At least some poor soul will benefit from my growing waistline (I know, I know I should be hitting the gym).

Moving Day post-Christmas turned out to be quite windy but thankfully not rainy and cold as the previous week had been. The raging tornadoes and pelting rain in Texas were still a day away. The buggers at UHaul failed to deliver on their promise of giving us a moving dolly but our swivel leather chair proved helpful for moving the heavy boxes of books. The next two days were spent indoors organizing and assembling new furniture that Ash was maha-excited about. Ikea proved to be our one-stop shop for all things related to the new household [and a quality used furniture store]. Ease in shopping, assembling, and of course, the cost factor played a big role in deciding to do our shopping at this warehouse furniture store.

We have more or less settled in our new apartment although a few cartons still remained unpacked and couple of bookshelves remained unfixed. But hopefully if UPS managed to find our new place, I can lay my hands on the B&D drill that I got for a steal to complete everything. I might put up some pictures when everything is in place.

And yeah I nearly forgot, Happy New Year to y’all.

    Happy New Year !

Moving is never ever fun - have you realized how you need a bigger truck each time you move. Btw, Ikea is our favorite store - we have traveled across state and country borders to get furniture and other kick-knacks from them.

Hope to see you around more frequently now - you will be spending lesser time on the highway now !

Happy New Year! Moving out is horrible, moving in is FUN. Esp now that you guys will move in together, it should be even more.
I love the compact flourescent bulbs. We have them in most of our covered bulb fixtures.. Don’t seem too different from the regular ones in terms of light, and apparently are supposed to save you $$. :)

The $10 BD grill sux big time.. the one that was on sale in Walmart.. we bought it, because I insisted we do..hoping you bought another one..if not, go return it right now :D

Bongo, Yup! you’re right about the truck. I (err..my possessions) arrived in two suitcases, then needed a car, then a van and now a truck. I hope to blog more. I’ve eliminated yet another indulgence that kept me occupied last month.

, Happy New Year to you too. Ditto on the moving in part. You get a chance to wipe the slate clean and start anew. Strangely although Walmart is promoting those compact fluorescent bulbs, I found a cheaper one at Albertsons. The light is just perfect and although the savings might not amount to much ($8-15 annually), as long as you dispose them off safely, there are good for the environment. And sorry, I didn’t go for the B&D drill. bought a generic brand (DriveMaster ?)

    Pat,

    Happy New year.

    Confused, I hope so too.

huh! tell me all about moving… a wise friend once told me (seeing my plight), after death and divorce, moving is the most traumatic thing. I can personally vouch for the moving bit! anyway, here is hoping 2007 is all settled and stable for you (how boring is that?!)

have a happy and peaceful 2007…

  7. Patrix Says:

Charu, although moving might not be as painful as death or divorce, I guess as Sqrl said, the ‘trauma’ of moving out is compensated by joys of ‘moving in’ to a new place. Happy New Year to you too.

  8. Charu Says:

true… esp a new home you like… (between 2001 znd 03, we moved home, city, country more than ten times - therefore the rant :))
