Bangladesh - Minnows No More

Bangladesh just completed a fantastic victory over World Cup contenders South Africa. Now, I don’t think they would be associated with the minnows tag anymore at least for the rest of this World Cup. Many considered their win against India as lucky and as a fluke. They were ‘accused’ of just upping their game in time against a complacent and inept Indian side. But this victory against South Africa, one of the four teams right now that have been playing consistently good cricket, cannot be dismissed as such. I didn’t watch the match but caught the score occasionally on Cricinfo. They restricted South Africa by more than 60 runs which is an impressive feat and Ashraful earlier had guided them to a healthy total.

India better watch out in their upcoming tour of Bangladesh after the World Cup lest the media label the tour as ‘Revenge of the Blue Billion’ or something ridiculous. These tags make it difficult to take such tours seriously.

I think this just shows the grip of bookies on the game of Cricket these days.

well said! actually i corrected myself while on-air while reading news! After I addressed Bangladesh as minnows …. (I replaced it with former minnows).
The reigning minnows at the moment is India and going by the way the BCCI is handling the crisis – its seems that we will be in for another thrashing when we go on the Bangladesh tour next. ;-)
One Bangladesh journalist I spoke to – said that there was ‘cricket chauvinism’ in India, the belief that India may have played bad – so the tigers won. As the boys have proved against the South Africans – they are indeed a promising lot of teenagers!

Sqrl, now that is a question for our journalist bhais. I gave up when they termed the phrase Blue Billion.

Parag, do you really think that the success of Bangladesh is due to the bookie nexus? Why?

, I guess we will continue to live under the delusion that we have a great team when in fact, our bowling attack which was considered the weakest performed better than the batsman. The term ‘paper tigers’ never fit anyone better.
