Beckham U.S. bound

This is big news. David Beckham, the name that spun off a patent kick & territory on the football field and not to mention, a really cool movie is now moving to the U.S. He has signed an astronomical $250 million five-year deal with MLS L.A. Galaxy and will be leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season. Probably, he’ll not be challenged as much on this side of the Atlantic, it would perhaps give him an opportunity to regain his top form which unfortunately he lacked for Real Madrid. Real Madrid as a club unfortunately wasn’t doing well either.

Revenue-crazy and signing deals crazy as U.S. is, this would certainly make news as it rivals baseball and NFL deals. Alex Rodriguez made news when he signed a similar $250M deal with Texas Rangers. He has since moved to the NY Yankees. So for soccer (as football is called in this part of the world), this is big news and promises to attract crowds. But let us see if it really does. On the other hand, Beckham’s soccer academy in Los Angeles will be glad to have their star in close vicinity. Beckham says:

“I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and
I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world’s most popular
game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own” [source].

On a sidenote, I have never seen the tattoo on Beckham’s arm. He certainly hopes that his wife is in for the long haul coz that big ass tattoo in Hindi can be awfully difficult to remove if things go downhill.

first time here….well, not actually lets just say I have been a mole a couple of times in the past..leaving silently. I know!!! I might just move to LA..adorbale isn’t he, needless to say I am a woman. On a different note..his contract is apparently worth more than the $250 mill ’cause he now keeps to a bigger chunk of his endorsement deals as well.
I know!! what’s with all that graffiti on his arm..let’s hope for his sake that their “I do’s” stick.

Orchid, nice to see you break your silence. Need more of that here if I am to keep writing :) Of course, his $250M is the ‘official salary’, everything else is perks including the increased fan base.

Big news indeed. Re: the tattoo - it was big news in India few years back when he got it (some people even mentioned that there is an apparent spelling mistake!). It can be, if necessary, removed by laser - famous example being Angelina Jolie removing ‘Billy Bob’ :-)

    Pat,

250 million is his salary? Unbelievable! I guess you will see him more on talk shows than the field. :)

  5. Patrix Says:

Bongo, I thought as much and plus there is some new removable ink you get for tattoos these days.

Confused, nothing like money to spark interest in American minds even if it is the most popular sport elsewhere in the world :) BTW “Their (L.a.Galaxy) $250 million figure includes salary and commercial endorsements over the length of Beckham’s contract. In other words, his move could be worth $1 million a week.” We all could do with a million a week, right?
