Can you hear me now?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or email alerts. Thanks for visiting!

Google starts talking and other IMs may soon see their marketshare sliding; including the possible death of Skype. A detailed analysis of Google Talk [via Chetan] suggests that the company is slowly moving in for the kill and now is the best time to get your hands on some Google stock. My personal experience with Google Talk was quite good (simple interface and quick download)although I haven’t had a long-distance voice conversation. I loved the "save recent chat history" feature. I can already see some murder mysteries being solved that way :)

Add me on your GTalk… at the above email address

i dont see an imminent danger to skype, since you cant call a telephone using google talk as yet…but yes, the other messenger services seem to be on their way out..

  3. Truth Fairy Says:

It’s all a matter of time Prashant. Google will enable that feature very soon. I’m sure they are working on it. (My big bro is a Senior Software Architect at Google :D).

Btw, Patrix, first time on your blog today. Came here from Ash’s blog and left a long comment on your “boring orientation” blog dated August 22nd. Sorry, I’m a true Aggie by heart and couldn’t resist the temptation to defend it with my life! :-) Check it out!

you can save chat history in other IMs as well.

  5. Patrix Says:

    Prashant, done!

Dissident, oops! I didn’t know that but I hear a rumor that Google is planning to buy Skype.

Truth Fairy, I think you meant that for Dissident. Beware of divulging details of your brother’s job; he might lose it.

Anya, not as a txt file but can we continue an incomplete convo.as GT does?

  6. Suhail Kazi Says:

Moi thinks, buying Skype is just a hype (nice rhyme, innit?). Google won’t benefit from that deal, as there are already many common users of both.

I haven’t got around voice, but frm all reviews, apparently the quality is better than Skype. And since unlike Skype, GTalk isn’t P2P, so it’s more secure too.

All Google needs to do is come out with a full-fledged kick-ass IM (they are getting there with support for nonGmail users), and rest will take care of itself.

However, offlate there are some murmurs on the net of Google showing off its evil side(CNet story). I hope they remain the way they are.

  7. Truth Fairy Says:

Lol! I don’t think I have to worry about putting my bro’s job in jeopardy! The information is right there on Google, under FAQs and Help. Also, when you right click on the Talk tool, apart from giving options to sign out, exit, disable notifications etc.., it also says “check for updates”. So I guess they are updating at lightning speed. I’m excited to see the end result.

  8. Patrix Says:

Suhail, maybe just a hype. But Google is lately pushing itself into everything. I hope they don’t lose focus of what they are after.

Truth Fairy, good! I just wanted to warn you :)

  9. Truth Fairy Says:

Yeah, I agree! They are even coming up with an OS! That’ll give some serious competition to Bill Gates. I found this interesting article sometime back. Check it out!!

Personally, I’m getting a little scared of Google. It’s taking our our lives man! Much like Microsoft did in the 80s…

    Suhail,

I too am skeptical of the Google-buying-Skype rumors — we’ll see I guess.

“GTalk isn’t P2P, so it’s more secure too.”

I’m not sure I buy that. GTalk currently does not support encryption while Skype does. It will apparently add encryption in a later release.

Also, Skype uses strong encryption (AES+RSA) and I do not see any glaring systemic vulnerabilities in their encryption scheme. If a hostile peer has resources to decrypt 256-bit AES*, then the routing protocol (P2P or direct client-to-client) is hardly the weakest link in the chain. :)

If one really wants to use these programs for secure communication, the more troublesome aspect to me is the closed-source nature of both applications which prevents examination of their encryption implementations.

    * I am guessing you are OK with the vetting given to AES

  12. Sakshi Says:

This is on a different note -

Thanks for the encouraging comment you left on my blog Patrix. BTW when am i gettin a little publicity on ‘Desi Pundit’ ??? :)

  13. Patrix Says:

Truth Fairy, I had read that article before. Thanks anyway. They might be launching a browser first then an OS.

Gabby, of course we have to be a bit wary about anyone who is almost into everything.

Sakshi, publicity maang ne se nahee miltee, buss mil jaati hai :) I’ll keep an eye out for any good posts from you.

  14. Sakshi Says:

    I get your point… :)

at this rate Google will soon replace Microsoft as the world’s most hated target.
it is the business equivalent of anakin skywalker going over to the dark side.
    the programme is neat.

Can you hear me now?

Thanks to Chetan for pointing out to me this new amazing ‘blog-accessory’ - Talkr. Now you can listen to my posts instead of reading them. Well, technically not in my voice but a default voice enabled by Talkr. I checked out Chetan’s feeds and the results are pretty impressive. Of course, Talkr is not going to understand Hindi or any regional language usage in my posts and the tone can be robotic at times but it works great for the value addition bit. You check out the audio feeds for my previous three posts (before Linking Park). Since I cannot dabble in HTML on Typepad, I have to figure out how to add the audio feeds for the archives. But I’ll try to manually provide a link for my future posts as soon as Talkr processes the feed.

It is really easy to add your blog to Talkr. Create an account, add your blog to their list, and copy the code to your audio feed. The output is in MP3 format.
