As the author says, I too have listened to several classical pieces without really understanding although enjoying them. Perhaps I should give it another try.
<p

But thanks to the bullyish ways of RIAA who haven’t recognized the changing trends in music sales, we were penalized heavily for even trying to download single tracks for our personal use (until iTunes knocked some sense into them). Before I get into describing this process to download music online that I stumbled on recently, I wish to make clear that I am in no way endorsing piracy but am only pointing you to resources that are already available out there.Online music has changed from being resident on servers or personal computers waiting to be downloaded or shared to being available in streaming format on various websites. You can listen all you want but you cannot download them to listen offline; just like radio but without the irritating RJ chatter. But there is a way you can download these streaming songs to your PC and all you need is a freely-available software and a conversion tool.

Download and Convert Online Music Files

1. Download and install Free Music Zilla on your computer. This software will let you download songs from streaming sites like IMEEMâ„¢, Last.fmâ„¢, Pandoraâ„¢, Myspace, eSnipsâ„¢, Mogâ„¢, iJiggâ„¢, Radio.blog.clubâ„¢ and almost all social music services.

2. Open Free Music Zilla and let it run in the background. Now, head over to your favorite social music service site that streams music. Moviewallah has the latest Bollywood hits that uses the IMEEMâ„¢ service.

3. Begin playing the song that you want to download. Free Music Zilla will automatically detect that song and give you the option to start downloading. Remember to select the song and hit the Download button before the Leech Timeout countdowns to zero. Also, remember to keep the song playing in the streaming device until it finishes downloading.

4. After it downloads to your chosen folder (default – C:\downloads), remember to rename the file to recognize it later since the original file name is long and consists of random characters.

4. That’s it! The song is now downloaded to your PC. The song will be in FLV format which plays easily in any FLV player. But if you wish to convert it to MP3 format in order to load it on your iPod or other music devices, then hop over to this site that converts FLV files to MP3. The beauty of this site is that you don’t have to download or install any software but instead just have to upload your FLV file and it converts it and lets you download the MP3 version.

The only limitation with Free Music Zilla is that it lets you download only ten songs per day. Not good when you are on a downloading spree. But if you wish for unlimited downloads then check out their sister product, Orbit Downloader which is similar but slightly different in the way it downloads files.

Legality of Using Free Music Zilla

Now, the tricky part of legality of using this method to download songs. I’m sure RIAA definitely will find it objectionable. But the logic is a little fuzzy in this case. Some argue that the tool we are using to download from streaming sites is simply a recording tool and akin to recording songs off radio that we have done since ages. However, in reality the tool is extracting the songs from the back end of the streaming services so technically it isn’t recording. But can we liken to say, reading an article online and then cut-pasting it into MS Word to read later? I’m sure plenty of people do that either to share content or just to save on Internet online time (photo credit: labanex).

But most people would be concerned if they can be tracked downloading songs when they use this tool. I’m not sure since I am not aware how exactly the technology works but a similar tool for extracting songs from MySpace streaming player received a cease-and-desist notice but none of the people that used it got anything. Anyway, the legal aspect of file-sharing finds you guilty if you upload pirated content which you do when you share files on a P2P network; I’m not so sure about downloading such content. If you think otherwise, please feel free to voice your concern in the comments.

I’m guessing, the music industry or the streaming sites can ban the tool or fix the loopholes that let such tools extract songs from the back end. Until then I guess, you can go crazy downloading songs from your favorite streaming sites. Just don’t talk about where you heard it from. Enjoy!
<hr

Thanks to my awful memory, I couldn’t recall anything apart from Blue Skies but thanks to Google, the complete lyrics could be unearthed. Incidentally the song was the most popular one in 1929 especially on Wall Street; ironically just before the Great Depression hit. The lyrics are as follows:

Blue skies smilin’ at me
Nothin’ but blue skies do I see
Bluebirds singin’ a song
Nothin’ but bluebirds all day long

Never saw the sun shinin’ so bright
Never saw things goin’ so right
Noticing the days hurrying hurrying by
When you’re in love, my how they fly

Blue days, all of them gone
Nothin’ but blue skies from now on
Blue skies smilin’ at me
Nothin’ but blue skies do I see

Blue days, all of them gone
Nothin’ but blue skies from now on
Nothin’ but blue skies from now on…

A little bit more blue as I captured the skies behind our apartment complex:

As summer sets in, the carefully packaged movies pop out of the woodwork all gleaming and ready to impress but lately the deluge of sequels has been less than satisfying. But this weekend was entirely different as we watched two immensely enjoyable movies – Live Free or Die Hard and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Although I meant to write up on Die Hard 4.0 first, the sheer joy that I experienced from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom makes it jump the queue.

As I mentioned in my one-line nine-star review on the sidebar, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is unabashedly Bollywood fare and best of all, it doesn’t pretend to be anything else. The movie has gotten intensely negative reviews from the mainstream critics. But I have learnt to trust only one reviewer and usually his recommendations are closest in taste to ours. His review and love for musicals had first introduced us to Jaan-e-man which being a Salman movie we would have skipped in the first place but ended up enjoying so naturally when he gave a big thumbs us to Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, we didn’t have to think twice. The one-and-half-hour drive to Houston to the nearest Bollywood theater and the experience of having burnt our retinas with insanely stupid movies has made us wiser and we make the trip only after being absolutely sure.

The best thing about JBJ is that it doesn’t pretend to be a different movie especially in an age when every Bollywood director tries to be different and instead ends up dishing the same crap. The plot is simple. Rikki Thukral (Abhishek Bachchan) and Alvira Khan (Preity Zinta) end up chatting at the railway station after the train bringing in their respective fiancees is delayed. They end up talking and telling stories about how they hooked up with their fiancees. Any more revelation of the plot will spoil the fun. Honestly, the plot doesn’t matter. It could have been about anything and yet the sheer love for making this movie would have still be difficult to hide. Rikki Thukral is your typical, as someone put it, Fobbie especially with his ringtone that goes “Ae Handsome! Ae Handsome!” He is the Bhatinda da puttar and a con man who profits from bringing in folks like him. Of course, if you ask him, he has a multitude of professions that can somehow be made to look honorable. He is a desi at heart and touts cricket match tickets but still loves Chelsea FC enough to get the sports news and night blanket. He is a kid at heart and loves comics especially Superman. On the other hand, Alvira is a wannabe socialite with big dreams of mansions and prince charming. A tad racist by being blatant that she prefers gooras instead of dark-skinned Indians or Pakistanis but then that’s what she wants to be but really isn’t. Both Rikki and Alvira are at heart asal desi and rib each other on India-Pakistan differences. They make no bones about wanting to be crowned Mr.and Ms.Southall respectively. The American counterpart would be Jackson Heights in NYC, Devon Avenue in Chicago, and Hillcroft in Houston so as to get an idea of the extent of their ambitions.

Believe it or not, the best sequences in the movie are its fantastically choreographed songs. The music is catchy and you have to fight hard to keep yourself from joining in the fun. Kitsch songs with lyrics like Kiss of love, kiss of love…stay away from kiss of love and Lautade…Ticket to Hollywood…Lautade are not meant to be dissected and analyzed but enjoyed to the hilt by letting yourself go in the rapid flow of color, riot of extras, and dances. Even the otherwise out-of-place song Bol Halke Halke soothes your nerves through beautiful visualization and a die-hard romantic spirit that is so typical of Bollywood. As a smart commenter over at Baradwaj’s blog notes, is one of the few dream sequences about a couple sitting in a foreign land and visualizing themselves back in desh (strangely the subtitles for the song said, “Hold me halke halke” which strangely also made sense). But the best is reserved for the title song which repeats itself several times in the movie, in the terrific 25-minute dance off routine in an obvious homage to typical Nasir Hussain style of film-making. I was ready to stand up and applaud at the end of it.

What many critics missed was that this movie doesn’t aim to break any new ground and instead is even content on doffing its hat to several of its predecessors that are etched in our memories. The subtle tributes to Qurbani, Sholay, Aradhana, Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai and Coolie are obvious yet subtle enough to hide a deeper relationship. For e.g. the Sholay tribute has the long-legged Abhishek Bachchan riding in the carrier car of a motorcycle alongside Bobby Deol with the song Yeh Dosti playing in the background but only after you think a little that you get it that these guys are the sons of the original actors. As Preity Zinta says, “”Chhoti chhoti details mein bada lutf hota hai.” I couldn’t have said it better. Amitabh thankfully doesn’t play a sutradhaar aka main-samay-hoon and is content popping up on the screen dressed in his colorfully jhatak embroidered jacket and two-headed guitar dancing to Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Those trying to make sense of his appearance fail to get it that he is merely providing a transition in the narration of a musical. The foot-tapping music and choreography of his interludes actually makes you look forward to the next one.

Lara Dutta and Bobby Deol play their characters as the ‘respective fiancees’ remarkably well especially Lara Dutta since her characters before and after interval are so different (you’ve to see the movie to know why). Other characters like Huffy Bhai only add to the eclectic quality of this movie frequently reminding us not to take either ourselves or the movie too seriously. The Shakespearean style of addressing the audience in Alvira’s narration of her tale is as fun as it is over-indulgent in imagination. The nature and content of their narration reveals much about the narrator as the story unfolds. Of course, there are couple of inspired moments from Hollywood movies like Before Sunset and Usual Suspects but it is genuinely inspiration as opposed to blatant copying that we are usually subjected too.

I am sure you’ve heard horrid things about this movie and how you should avoid it like the plague. But if you have to trust me once, do so now and watch this movie preferably on the big screen. Further more, if you want to give your American friends a taste of real dance-n-music Bollywood fare, take them along.

Update: Annie also loved the movie and its little quirks. I agree especially with this part:

“The theme song (and dance) grows on you, and it assumes a special growth curve when you ‘see’ it. Listening to it is just not the same thing. Once you’ve seen it on the big screen, the song somehow slips into your blood and throbs there, willing you to get up and jhoom-o-fy.”

<hr

The article rightly goes beyond Sanjaya and attributes his success on the television’s most popular show to America’s disgruntled public. Just before this season started, American Idol was gloating from the success of Carrie Underwood’s win at the Grammy’s and Jennifer Hudson’s almost-certain win at the Oscars. An article in the NY Times even suggested that Idol was different from all reality TV shows due to the high success rates of its contestants post-season. If you looked at the past year, you also might be inclined to believe so but we forget the failed singing careers of Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Burrino, and last-year’s winner, Taylor Hicks, who probably was a better version of Sanjaya (according to the Chron).

I always believed that American Idol was reality television at its pompous best (or worst). The show’s producers arrogantly suggested that it was probably the only way America was going to discover talent. The Chron article puts it better:

Malakar has become the most concrete example that Americans have come to understand the joke and American Idol’s bubble is deflating. Until Malakar came around, voters have faithfully given the talented, most marketable singers their support, and most importantly, they’ve played by judges’ and producers’ rules. American Idol has existed in an alternate universe, one that demands a 24-like suspension of disbelief. For six seasons, viewers have taken advice from the strangest arbiters of good talent: Randy Jackson, who touts his stint with Journey far more than his stint with Aretha Franklin, and Paula Abdul, a long-forgotten ’80s singer who danced with an animated cat in her best-known hit, Opposites Attract. And viewers have let themselves sink into a world where real-life lounge singers such as Celine Dion become luminaries.

The number of people that believe that Sanjaya Malakar is squashing the dreams of many talented singers is astounding. They forget that it is the American public that keeps voting him in and the only way to counter that is to vote in larger numbers for others. The cell phone company (AT&/ Cingular) and the show wins either ways, thanks to the ‘standard text messaging charges apply.’

The Chron article then hammers the final nail in American Idol coffin:

It all flies in the face of what has made AI a success — the idea that the American public can use its free will. So when the winners aren’t really winning and producers fill casts with the same types of people — row after row of attractive girls who can wail like Mariah Carey — viewers feel manipulated, and that’s when the likes of Malakar become the perfect revenge.

However, American Idol will still continue to attract viewers albeit in declining numbers until it loses its base to the next stupid reality show. Anyway, since most of the visitors to this blog aren’t interested in any cultural or social dissection of a television show and come down here only for Sanjaya’s pictures, I cannot help but oblige [from People]. Here enjoy:

Lycos 50 tracks the people, places, and things that Internet users search for over the past week. Celebrity searches for Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Jessica Alba, Britney Spears have been popular ever since such tracking began. In fact, Pamela Anderson has managed to appear in the Lycos 50 list ever since the list (1995) began making her the top searched celebrity. It is interesting to see how implants, stolen sex tapes, botched marriages, and few ridiculous yet popular TV shows can affect a celebrity’s status in an industry where any kind of publicity is welcome.

Of course, considering the public’s short-term memory for gossip, you must expect celebrities that have been around for a while to figure in this list, right? Well, Quick Online Tips notices that now-ousted American Idol contestant Antonella Barba has been on the Lycos 50 for four weeks now and already has a Lycos50 Elite Star which is kinda strange because that status is usually reserved for searches that have been on the list for more than 50 weeks. This is significant because in the entertainment industry, generating buzz is a huge positive factor irrespective of the nature of the buzz i.e. positive or negative. Publicists in Hollywood are now well versed in the art of honing celebrity statuses and keep their clients in the limelight. Paris Hilton is probably the biggest example. In spite of hardly doing anything that can be considered worthwhile, she is one of the most talked about celebrities today. You may hate her passionately but simply cannot ignore her picture on the magazine cover in the checkout aisle.

But Antonella’s entry in this so-called elite list might be a harbinger of things to come. As you might have heard, she gained notoriety for having her semi-naked pictures (some fake) splashed across the media while she was still on American Idol. She was the earlier pinup girl for the folks at Vote For the Worst. Now Sanjaya Malakar is generating similar buzz (even on this blog) and getting mentioned not only on blogs and YouTube videos but also in prominent mainstream media outlets like the BBC and NY Times. This certainly means that whenever he is voted off the show, he will have a line of publicity agents waiting to tap his buzz potential. On a sidenote, Shyamali, Sanjaya’s sister has gradually emerged as a celebrity [at least online] in her own right probably due to the ‘hot’ factor which was further enhanced by her appearance in the American Idol audience last week.

Would this lead to wannabe publicity seekers to audition for American Idol (or other popular reality shows) not to win it all but just to get noticed and talked about so that they can have a somewhat decent entertainment career? Perhaps this has always been their intent except it is becoming more apparent now. And sites like Vote for the Worst are more than willing to help make a fool of yourself in front of millions while laughing your way to millions. Like they say, you never know what the public wants or will like. People earn their livelihoods trying to understand that question and yet make money even if they are completely off the mark. Now that’s a perfect career for those who want to earn big even if they are doing it all wrong.

PS. If you are wondering why isn’t Sanjaya already in the top 50, take a look at Google Trend’s comparison figures with Antonella Barba. The poor kid no matter how cute his female fans think he is, is no match for a naked chick. Technorati WTF has him at #3 [as of 04/05/07, 16:00 CST] though.
<hr

Rumor has it that she will be trying out for next year’s American Idol. It seems that the Malakars are planning on owning American Idol for good and hogging all the attention until everyone just gets tired of them and banishes Idol to the nether world.

Camila’s MySpace profile page has a audio clip of a duet with Sanjaya. You decide if she is talented enough to avoid the hate flood. Well, at least she is white or looks white so that should help a little. And better still, she doesn’t have the dreaded Malakar tag. But then again, she is not as hot as her other cousin – Shyamali Malakar. Incidentally, she was on CNN’s Larry King Live with her mom to talk about Sanjaya. This is what she had to say about her cousin:

CAMILA RECCHI : I don’t think he deserves it [the fun they're making of Sanjaya]. I think he’s really sweet and wonderful. And he’s shown that he can take a beating from the judges and from America as well. I think he can pull it out a little bit more, but I definitely think he’s going strong. I’m very proud of him and very excited for him.KING: Do you think he can win the whole thing?

CAMILA RECCHI: Well, based on what we’ve seen, I honestly don’t know. I think he’s got a pretty fair chance. He’s got a big fan base.

She also thinks that Sanjaya has become a formidable American folk hero and is handling all the hate well. Thus ends my Sanjaya update. Now, go live your life.
<hr

First, I don’t understand why people are getting their panties (or undies) in a twist over a dumb reality show (again, it isn’t about singing.) But all wackiness was surpassed when a certain ‘sparklechick’ embarked on a hunger strike to vote Sanjaya out [YouTube link.] As Anna at Sepia Mutiny says, nothing more could make America look lame than starving yourself for a child on American Idol rather than the homeless, the environment, or even the war. The child, by the way definitely appreciates all the attention and publicity he gets which only translates into more votes from the Vote For the Worst crowd.

Ok! she starts starving to get Sanjaya out but then American Idol is telecast only once a week so what does she do for the rest of the week? I hope the concept of a hunger strike is not lost on ‘sparklechick’ but then after sixteen days after getting her share of attention and cheap publicity, she decides to call it quits [YouTube link.] for ‘medical reasons’. But it turned out that, she had in fact gained weight. LOL! Why wasn’t Gandhi on that diet when he went on hunger strikes for probably larger causes? And she talks of a ‘voting strategy’ to oust Sanjaya. I think voting for Sanjaya once instead of voting eight times for others to counter the effect is a better strategy, not to mention saving a ton of money on your texting bills. Why? Why would you get so riled about a TV show that might be fixed anyway?

If you think she is the lone wackjob out there, then head over to Confused’s post on Howard Stern’s strategy to bring American Idol down. The comments are unbelievable. Talk about a grassroots campaign with the wrong grass! People seriously believe that Sanjaya is causing the death of pop music in America (as if what Britney did or does isn’t enough.)

Now although I’ve never voted for American Idol (and never will), I just hope Sanjaya stays on little longer. If nothing else, just to piss these people off. As McDonald says, I’m lovin it.

Technorati Tags: <a

However, after yesterday’s episode, he might just stay another week if not more. Sanjaya shed his shy guy image, sang “You Really Got Me“, pranced around the stage & among the audience, and flailed his hair around. He still sucked but I repeat American Idol is not a singing competition.

That was enough to get a little girl crying tears of happiness. As if this week’s theme British Invasion wasn’t enough that Fox had to repeatedly show a typical symptom of Beatles Mania while Sanjaya was singing. Nope, it wasn’t a desi teenager as some would like us to think. Personally, I think it was a classic stunt by Fox of playing to the masses who’ve kept Sanjaya in so far [can't beat them, join them.] They even got Sanjaya to hug the little girl probably giving her immense joy. I don’t think she stopped crying even after Sanjaya was done. Even Simon couldn’t help pointing to her as a judgment of Sanjaya’s performance [video and 40+ screen caps.] What do pre-teen girls know about singing, right? Again, you’ll ask that if you think American Idol is about singing and not reality TV at its watchable best. Take a look at the little girl. It is not call centers or desi (south-asian) ghettos organizing ‘Malakrazy’ parties to keep him on. It is the American tween girl demographic. It is the same demographic that made Britney Spears popular. I should assume Sanjaya Malakar is the least of their crimes.

If the tween wave wasn’t enough to tide Sanjaya over, the folks at Vote for the Worst have been joined by shock-jock Howard Stern and his 5 million listeners in making Sanjaya’s case. Responding to accusations of a desi conspiracy, the newly-crowned specialist, Confused (now outed) shares his wisdom with ABC News:

“There’s not a concerted effort to make him win,” said Rohit Pradhan, a frequent blogger on DesiPundit.com and other sites catering to Indian interests. Pradhan added, however, that there is online chatter about Malakar being on the show. “I definitely think Indian-Americans take him as one of their own,” he said. “There’s a feeling of pride, or being part of mainstream America.”

But that doesn’t stop the hidden racism from rearing its ugly head [see this comment (slightly edited)] I hadn’t seen such a wave of hatred for John Stevens couple of seasons ago (it’s a frikking TV show.)

PS. Why are people still searching for Shyamali, his sister?

Update: MTV has the scoop on the ‘star crier’ on American Idol. It turns out that Ashley is from Riverside, California and was not a ‘special guest’ on the show or an American Idol plant. “Ashley and her mother got tickets on a Web site to attend a taping of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” that also included a dress rehearsal for “Idol.” When producers spotted her crying during the run-through, they offered her the prime seats. Now that’s one classic example of 15 seconds of fame that your tears can get you. By the way, she cried throughout the show and supports Sanjaya Malakar, Melinda Doolittle, Gina Glocksen and Jordin Sparks equally. Bur fortunately, Idol showing her crying during Sanjaya’s performance helped him survive at least one more week.

specialist on American Idol opinions. But since Confused referred to me as such on DesiPundit, I’ll try to sneak in an opinion. Mera Gussa blogging on the O3 domain attributed Sanjaya’s continued presence as racist behavior by Indians. The blogger says:

The Indian/Indian origin population in the US is going all out to support Sanjaya. In fact there was even a blogger on O3 who promoted the idea of voting for Sanjaya even though he/she admitted Sanjaya had inferior talent. The rules of the game allow any person to cast as many votes he or she wishes to. The voter has to pay for voting. Everywhere I go the Indian community is all ga-ga about Sanjaya and their support for him. And yes, they even admit that he is not as talented as his competitors. Yet they vote for him, multiple times, paying for each vote.

Uber Desi who was one of the earlier bloggers to have promoted Sanjaya responds appropriately:

My contention is that Sanjaya does not possess the intangiables that make an American Idol. His performances are monotonous. He cannot dance to save his life, hit different notes, move and entertain the audience like a pop star is supposed to. He will be voted off at some stage but all this does not translate to “he is not talented”. He is just not American Idol talented (emphasis mine.)

As far as my ‘special opinion’ goes, I agree with Uber Desi that the blogger at O3 has it all wrong. If you count every motel-owning desi in the U.S., we are around 2-2.5 million and I’m sure not everyone is that enthusiastic about American Idol much less voting for a desi contestants. We may be all supportive and sing praises but vote we will not because it costs money. That said, there might be few thousand shrieking desi girls who go all awwwww when Sanjaya takes the stage and few of them might even instantly get on their cell phones to vote for him. But the bulk of the American Idol votes come from girls in the demographic group of 9-16 of all hues and shades. White, black, brown, they are largely color blind (racist attitudes come at a much later age, according to me) and vote for the cutest guy on the block. Few seasons ago, John Stevens who could sing only Sinatra well enough reached the final 6 dodging many raised eyebrows. I liked Sanjaya in the initial rounds but agree with the ‘critics’ that he has lost his edge among other versatile singers. I didn’t vote for him then and I don’t vote for him now.

I just take American Idol for what it is – yet another reality show. I watch it because nothing else is watchable on a dull Tuesday night and it keeps me away from my laptop – from one idiot box to another. To answer the question if it is racism that keeps Sanjaya on, the simple answer is, nope. Indians can hardly agree with each other on other important issues so why the hell would they for a reality show that makes them pay for their support? Those who vote for him think that he is a good singer and he probably is (don’t know much about music frankly) but as Uber Desi says, he simply is not American Idol material where you have to sashay around, make pouty expressions, and appear all dreamy which Sanjaya probably cannot. His long hair that even Ryan Seacrest envies has kept him alive so far.

If you really believe American Idol is about finding a good singer, then you better wake up. It is simply about creating entertaining reality TV, their donation drive for African kids later next month notwithstanding. If you are getting all riled up about racism on reality TV just the way you did when it happened on Big Brother UK, it is time for you to get a life. If I have one is not the question.

Update#1: Vote For The Worst is officially backing Sanjaya Malakar. And as far as I know, there is nothing desi about that site. So this might be one source of his votes.

Update#2: TV Squad, the blog that is one-stop shop for everything on television today strongly defends Sanjaya. It is one of the better defenses out there for the poor kid:

Sanjaya is also cute, with great hair and an awesome smile. He clearly has the teenybopper “crush” vote. Should young girls be voting for a guy just because he’s cute? Sure, why not? This wouldn’t be the first generation to make an average singer a pop idol because of great hair…In some ways, Sanjaya is totally Idol-worthy because he has amassed a huge fanbase despite some very flawed performances. This tells me that this kid does have something special — the elusive IT FACTOR. And more importantly, he appeals to the teenybopper audience — which makes him extremely appealing to record companies. He might not be there yet, but Sanjaya is young and has POTENTIAL.

Technorati Tags: <a
