And blogs would be nowhere without these newspaper stories especially since most political content on blogs is reactionary and depend greatly on quoting news stories extensively. This in turn helps the newspapers and major news outlets as in the eyes of Google, they receive plenty of inbound links from a variety of sources which results in pushing up their PageRank and boosting their SERPs. The PageRank for NY Times, CNN, and MSNBC is 9; a ranking that any webmaster will kill for. When you are searching for the latest on any breaking news, it is likely that these major news outlets will rank right at the top and get maximum traffic. These news outlets are also the first places people are likely to go directly to get their news.
But what stories attract the maximum traffic on these sites? With a heated political climate and renewed interest in the presidential race, you might think it would be one of such stories. Or is it one of the countless political scandals especially the sex-related like the Eliot Spitzer prostitution scandal? Nope, it is the mundane Oscar Red Carpet slide shows that got NY Times its highest traffic day at 37.6 million pageviews. It almost makes you wonder what exactly people want to read or see online. No wonder the umpteen celebrity magazines like People or US Weekly are so popular leading to their online ripoffs like TMZ or Perez Hilton. Is the relative anonymity of the Net attracting eyeballs to this content?
Given India’s fascination with gossip and celebrities, why hasn’t any news media outlet tapped this potential yet? Magazines like Stardust, Filmfare, or Cine Blitz have no particularly attractive or robust websites. Given the popularity of searches for actresses and other celebrity-related content, any site would make a killing if designed or marketed appropriately. There have been some efforts in form of sites like Bombay Bitch or the Debonair Blog but not significant enough.

Debonair Blog - LOL - Now that’s a site which has capitulated on its potential. Isn’t it one of the most visited sites, at least in India?
